Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Hi, bought myself a brand new LG W2261VP 22" monitor, it's brand new in packaging.
But I have noticed this on all my monitors, my older Hanns.G 15" and 17" and my old CRT TV I still use. They all have a warmth burning smell, well not burning, like dull smell. Anyway the back of this LG monitor has a vent, so I don't know what. A radiator type of smell.
Is this normal for monitors and old CRT TVs? Should I be worried?
Thanks
Mike :)
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
I had it, quite badly, on my old HP w19 LCD. The current Dell LEDs don't really, although there is a very faint odour at the top of it.
I've only ever noticed it with my nose right up against the monitors though. If you're smelling it from a foot away that's a bit odd.
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Oh no sorry not from a foot away, however my CRT TV you can, that bad?
This LG monitor you need your nose right up to the vent to smell it. I noticed it when plugging the DVI in. It isn't overpowering, just odd smell. Was wondering if its necessarily a bad thing
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
I'll post back if my monitor has burnt up in a week or so :P just kidding.
Another question about monitors in general, my monitor does not have speakers, so why does it have a HDMI port? I'm using a standard DVI-I single link cable that came with it until my HDMI 1.3 comes.
I am putting this down to the cable, but why does WHITE have a patchy look to it? Is that normal. It looks like you have sweaty fingers and have rubbed the screen, it isn't completely clear white. If that makes sense?
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Well, HDMI is still a useful connection to have - it's perfectly capable of carrying a video signal without audio. I use it interchangeably with DVI sometimes, where convenient. No idea about the white thing.
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Ah right thanks! I will probably just switch over to it completely seen as it's there, may give slightly better quality over this cheap quality DVI cable, hopefully :P
Maybe the white thing is just my graphics card, OR, my eyes :P
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Hi again, HDMI came through, all good. BUT I just noticed something very odd. Why does my monitor have a volume control.. but with no built in speakers? That makes no sense.
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
I would assume that a very similar monitor is produced with speakers on it, and they just haven't bothered to edit the menu, instead using the identical one for both.

I believe your monitor supports audio out from HDMI, i.e. there's a 3.5mm stereo jack on your monitor somewhere that outputs sound from the HDMI source. This is what the volume control is for.
With this you can connect speakers or headphones to your monitor rather than your computer, or what ever is connected by HDMI.
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Just took a look, no 3.5mm jack :( looks like LG couldn't be bothered to edit the menu.
Just out of curiosity how good is the sound quality through HDMI than standard analogue (say from my sound card).
Thanks for the replies :)
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
I just had a look at the LG W2261VP manual and it shows an audio jack on the back of the monitor just to the right of the HDMI port. Then again, LG could have left the port in on the manual as they've possibly done with the volume :D.
Anyway, on HDMI and audio quality, and by that I'm strictly referring to quality rather than capabilities between HDMI and soundcard output. In this case, it depends on the DAC and amplifiers of either the soundcard or the monitor, because as soon as a digital audio signal goes analogue, audio quality will start to come in to play.
I don't know what the LG is (or could be) equipped with sound-wise but I'm going to put money on your soundcard, the X-Fi Xtreme Gamer as being better for sound quality. Reason being, there is no incentive for LG to make your monitor sound awesome, on the other hand your soundcard is pretty well equipped.

HDMI as a standard is quite a good carrier for sound signal IIRC, totally capable of pushing the necessary content to an AV receiver.
The problem is what produces the HDMI, I know certainly in some cases people have had real trouble with getting their video cards to properly output sound. If you've got a decent sound card you would hope that would be better. As I said though, HDMI is just the cable at the end of the day, it's what's at either end that matters for audio quality.
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Thanks, guess I will stick with HDMI for the sake of it :P I don't plan on using audio through it then if its hit and miss. Seems decent, however I did have to "scale" the image as there were boarders around it. I don't know whether its something to do with the pixel format the LCD can handle or something else.
But on the "patchy" looking thing. It isn't my video card, its the same outcome with my Sky HD box attached. This patchy look isn't pixel block related.
If I stare at the same spot and focus on a white background for a while it looks like cracks, like a desert. From a distance you can see all over the screen which looks like water marks, very faint multi colours, weaving around, there is no pattern to it. This is the best I can describe it :P if you look you can see it from quite a distance.
Anyone got any idea? Searched on google nothing really coming up about it.
Can anyone notice this on their LCD monitors? Mines very visible on white backgrounds, but shows up on all backgrounds. Gaming its fine because colours are constantly changing, but browsing and work its clear as day. I am puzzled
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Firstly, my LG W2252S has the same smell. It's just because the monitors get very hot. Infact! Last year when I was sleeping on the ground floor on a main road (with fellow students/local pikeys walking by at all hours) I couldn't leave my windows open properly and if I left my monitor switched on (even if just on standby) I woke up with a dry throat and a headache because the room overheated. Crazy I know.
HDMI ports are great for if you have a games console because it usually means you can just plug it in and go rather than worrying about convertor cables.
I was going to suggest that it was perhaps the texture of the screen that you were seeing but if you can see it from far away then I'm not sure what it could be. The way you describe it sounds quite serious, does it affect your viewing badly or is it just irritating?
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
Wow, it gets that hot. Thanks for the heads up I better be careful. No wonder I have started coughing recently :P Windows closed.
I don't own game consoles, in fact I own the older PS2 which is analogue :(
About the screen, what do you mean by texture? It isn't bad, not like it's all over clearly. If you scan your eyes over it looks like a normal monitor, but because I can see some "type" of texture on the screen it's irritating me :P like a bad .jpeg image.
It's as if ALL the individual pixels are showing different shades of the same colour creating a visible pattern-like texture on the screen. if that makes sense?
Not sure if it is serious, but could this be something to do with the panel?
Any software to check out the quality of the image to find out if its the panel? Thanks for the reply :)
Re: Monitor/TV - Burning Smell? Warm Smell?
In fairness the room was quite small with a low ceiling so it heated up quickly but yeah.
Sorry but I was talking about the physical texture of the screen surface. ^_^ I'm not sure what it could be then as all i can imagine is the effect that you get when you put your finger to an lcd and the pixels looks slightly warped.
