I currently have a DELL U2311H which I use vertically and is great, the model kalniel linked is basically the current version, great choice

I have the 2212HM, exactly the same thing but just a touch smaller - http://www.scan.co.uk/products/215-d...gadp-usb-black
It's an excellent monitor, and the rotation is very smooth and simple as well.

Seems to be a Dell theme here. I can only say I've never found their alienware line to be any good, It's overpriced and low spec, is the same not said for their monitors? (I've not tried their monitors)
Edit: Never experienced their monitors, however they do seem to have a fairly high response time (8ms). Thoughts?

Not at all. Dell do a range right from the most basic screens, through to professional level ones. They are competitively priced if you shop around and most have excellent support (usually next day swap out with anything decent).
Alienware are aimed at the equivalent of Apple users that want a PC . Keep in mind we're enthusiasts.

Not a fan of their PC's but been using their monitors for about 10 years now. Right back to the old 30-40kilo CRTs. Never had a problem.

Oh also. Currently powering 2 monitors via a 7850 GPU (Motherboard has integrated which are utilized by LucidMVP). The monitors in use at the moment are using 1 HDMI and 1 DVI(GPU)-> D-Sub.
I've read around that the card requires some special setup to get 3 monitors running at once. Any experiences there?

Alienware has only been Dell for a few years, was part of them trying to branch out into trendy consumer markets.
The more important side is them as a company for corporates - networking equipment, servers, and en masse reliable desktops... the monitors are from that side of the company, and are some of the best available.

I expect it's a completely different bit of business. But check the reviews. I think the ones we're talking about are class I devises, which is a step above the quality of most monitors on the market (0 dead pixels by definition for example - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_13406-2). Dell are superb at backing this up.
They are a realistic response time. Beware monitors that advertise lower than they will actually get in the real world. If you are concerned about response time though don't buy an IPS monitor - anything lower than about 8ms will be using quite aggressive RTC. Go for a 120hz TN if that's important (some TNs can be great quality too).Edit: Never experienced their monitors, however they do seem to have a fairly high response time (8ms). Thoughts?

Every monitor can be vertically orientated, with a special stand if necessary.
Yes but a rather pointless comment: while you can orientate a TN panel vertically you may very well not see much then.
Which is the reason everyone with some experience here has recommended IPS panels - although *VA and PLS would be fine too. Basically you need excellent viewing angles to be able to use a monitor vertically. And yes, those panels do not have the fast refresh rates of TN panels - but then fast refresh rates is about the only thing TN is good for IMO.
