    Monitor Suggestion

I've been stuck using the same Viewsonic 1080p monitor for roughly 3 years now and think it's about time for a change. I recently purchased an ACER 23" Monitor from Scan and had to send it back within days as the gloss panel across the front made viewing impossible even from the desktop and moving the monitor around didn't help what so ever.

I use my PC mostly for gaming and a bit of video editing in Sony Vegas, I'd like to move past 60hz but I'm clueless over what's good and what's not as I've been out of the monitor scene for some time now. Price wise, I wouldn't mind spending £300/£350 on the right monitor as It's going to need to last roughly 3/4 years again.

Any help would be great as I haven't got a clue what I'm looking at anymore.

I don't know many high refresh rate monitors off the top of my head, but the Asus ones have been very well regarded and I, along with many others I'm sure will swear by Asus' track record. I still have a G1S which is at least 5 or 6 years old. Not one dead pixel. Here are some of their 144hz monitors.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

Have to say the 24" one has caught my eye, not sure if 27" is going to be too big or not as I'm sat quite close to the monitor. Is IPS not preferred not over TN panels? That seems quite expensive for a regular TN.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

From what I understand, only TN panels can hit the speeds necessary to make such a monitor, so I guess it comes down to your use scenario. You could prioritize colour reproduction or speed. The choice is a very subjective one.

For what it's worth, given the games I play, keeping a constant 60FPS is plenty; and a number of gamers can't really tell the difference. If there is any, it is so hard to tell without something like a side-by-side, and if you have to go that far, is there really a notable benefit in day to day use? Given you mentioned you do editing, that might help swing you towards something like a ProArt or Ultrasharp.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

So It's more of deciding which would be better for gaming between the IPS & TN? I've found two monitors that I like the look of as they don't have much bevel around the edge but am not sure on them.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/23-ao...50m1-6ms-black
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/23-as...dio-silver-fra

Would either of them be suited towards gaming? I am still looking at that 24" ASUS 144Mhz but wondering If it may be overkill as you said about being able to see over 60fps.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

I wouldn't say either is superior, they offer different features which may be more relevant to different consumers, but if anything you could say IPS monitors are superior to 60Hz TN panels purely on colour reproduction, but 144Hz TN panels outpace the IPSs which are stuck at 60 afaik.

Between the two you posted, the Asus seems a little better, as it clocks its GTG response time in the region of typical TN panels of 5ms, whereas the AOC clocks in at 6ms. It might result in a little less motion blur. I've seen that Asus before and it has quite a slim bezel. Pretty nice if you are going to get a couple and do something like Eyefinity. Which reminds me...

(Novatech and Newegg links have pics so you can see how thin the bezel is... )

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

    Dell U2412M?

24", IPS, 4-port USB, Ultrasharp pixel guarantee, and 1920x1200 rather than 1080. About £200.

On the other hand, it's 6-bit so a bit of a compromise for photo work, and the money has gone into a specific feature set, so no speakers, and no HDMI port.

It all depends exactly what you need. For instance, do you value speakers in a monitor? Personally, I couldn't care less as I use decent external speskers.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

I've liked that ASUS 23" for a while now but just seeing that LG has made me wonder If I should go for that and setup 3 over time, never owned an ASUS monitor before so I've been skeptical even after reviews as I normally stick to what I know but I've had an LG before and it was fairly good.

The main reason I keep going IPS is because of the color, everything stands out more and it just changes the way games look completely. I'm actually seriously considering the LG you just mentioned now simply because of the price, response time and bezel. Hopefully I can find it on Scan.

    @Saracen

I don't know much about 6-bit or how it would effect the video/photo editing but I'm not majorly into that as of yet, only just getting my YouTube channel up and running. Speakers aren't necessary as I'll be using a headset or my speakers. It's mainly just down to what favors or shows games off better, as I said above I do favor IPS because of the color difference & If it lowers motion blur then I'd favor it even more over spending £280 on the ASUS AETAaAS mentioned, could then add another SSD with the spare money.

I haven't done any video stuff for quite a while, but I doubt the 6-bit issue would have much impact. For photo work it can, if you're serious about it.

The issue is the number of colours the monitor can accurately convey, compared to the colour gamut you're using, like Adobe RGB. 6-bit monitors display a colour gamut quite a bit short of Adobe RGB, which can lead to inaccuracies in colour calibration, and to a degree, in editing.

But, for 8-bit IPS, you can probably more or less double the budget. So, even if you're serious about photo work, it might still be beyond available budget.

Given what you say, I wouldn't think 6-bit would be an issue, and I'd expect the other alternatives you've looked at would also be 6-bit, though I haven't checked.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

I rarely ever edit pictures/photos so that's not really an issue at all, the video work is just a hobby for YouTube. The main thing I'm looking for in the monitor is to run games smoothly, hopefully lessen motion blur and improve my performance.

Have you ever try using LG? It's also a good one.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

I would suggest you to go with a big screen and a pretty decent refresh rate. Go for brands like Samsung or Panasonic. This will be good for a change on your side. I recently purchased a Samsung S27B970D 68.6 cm (27") Edge LED LCD Monitor from this wiseguys.co.nz site at a pretty great deal. I think you should browse a little and decide for yourself what is good for you. Good luck.

    Re: Monitor Suggestion

I recently purchased an ips LG 22" panel and am very happy with it if that helps. But that was only about a third of your budget. Not sure personally if I would want to go above 24".
