What is going on with monitor resolution vs price?
hiya lovely people.
I've got a question:assuming I realise that when making screens, the more then can get from a single sheet, the better the value can be.....
and assuming the case and stand and power supply isn't free....
why does a new Toshiba tablet with 2560 x 1600 resolution..... and CPU.... and ram.... and storage... and development of android os.... and battery... and motherboard....etc... cost less than a monitor with the same pixel size and lower resolution per cm?
what have I missed? what's special about a tablet to make it cheap? is it app sales after purchase into the mix? is it just a really really bad screen quality.... cos I doubt that?
let's face it... the tablet is touch screen too......
I'm bemused!
Re: What is going on with monitor resolution vs price?
By same pixel size, do you mean same sized display (ie you aren't cutting more out of the same sheet)? That's unusual given monitors are normally much larger than tablets.
Monitors are more expensive for two main reasons: substrate area (the cutting more out of the same sheet type thing), and volume of sales with its economy of scale effect.
Re: What is going on with monitor resolution vs price?
I've always assumed it was to do with volume of sales, since lots of phones and tablets are getting higher res screens, more are being produced, whereas 27" high res screens aren't common and therefore come at a premium :(
Re: What is going on with monitor resolution vs price?
I have always assumed that the prices of monitor depends on if it is LED or LCD and the type of technology like IPS or TN used inside to make it.
Re: What is going on with monitor resolution vs price?
I think a lot of phones and tablets have LED IPS screens anyway.
Re: What is going on with monitor resolution vs price?
Is it anything to do with defect frequency + impact? A large res on a small screen presumably doesn't suffer as badly from defective pixels as a large screen with same pixel count (and therefore larger pixel size+pitch) since it will be harder for your eye to see them.

same here.

I imagine you get higher yields on smaller screens, for one.
Re: What is going on with monitor resolution vs price?
probably will sell more tablet devices than monitors and the profit margins would be smaller per unit for tablets but higher when volume of sales is taken into account.

I believe that is the fundamental point.
Large panels used to have a really high scrap rate, hence high cost per square inch. Manufacturing has improved and costs have dropped, but the effect is still there.
