Monitor for New Build - Benq XL2411T or Dell U2412M or Other

    Hi Guys,

    My first post -

I'm planning on buying the 3XS Z87 Nanu GTX - with the i7 4770K and 256GB 840 Pro upgrades (I'm waiting for the R9 290 NDA tomorrow and to Nvidia's response price wise later in the month)

I am just wondering which monitor to get alongside - I would ideally want two Viewsonic VX2370SMH-LED's however my wife has put her foot down so I have to pick one monitor only.

I have £200 to £250ish to spend on the monitor - I was thinking of Benq XL2411T or Dell U2412M

    Ones a 144hz TN and the other is a 6-bit e-IPS

I would be primarily using it for gaming - but I don't mind sacrificing the speed for a better quality monitor.

Reading around the Benq is supposed to feel snappy and have good colour representation for a TN
The Dell is 19:10 and supposed to look brilliant after a bit of fiddling, although it has a dodgy anti-glare coating

My worry is that I get the Benq and get disappointed by the TN display, or I get the Dell and get annoyed by the anti-glare coating

I could also get the budget Viewsonic (mentioned above) and invest more in the PC.

Thank you in advance for any advice

I guess it depends on what type of games you play, if you are a serious first person shooter fan then definitely get the XL2411T.

Here is a review of the U2412M where the user compares it to a similar Benq monitor, the 120hz XL2420T. It might be useful - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-9BqQBB0CE

Re: Monitor for New Build - Benq XL2411T or Dell U2412M or Other

I disagree. The Dell is a far superior monitor in all ways. 1920x1200 so more real estate, better colours and contrast, and it's IPS and backed with a 3year no dead pixel warranty. It is fine for gaming. See in depth review here: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2412m.htm

Responsiveness was good and input lag was very low making this a good choice for gamers, multimedia users and those wanting a screen capable of handling a wide range of uses.

out of interest why would you get annoyed by the anti-glare coating? I get annoyed by glare on stupid glossy screens. Bring on the anti-glare. If it is at all like the matt screen on my U2311h then it is fine and quite desirable IMO.

Some people are really picky about monitor coatings, if it has a harsh grainy anti-glare coating it can make the whites appear dirty.

Thank you for the review links - I don't see myself as an elite gamer, so the U2412M looks the way to go

There are rumours of a U2414H on the way in December - Would it be worth the wait?

ps the anti-glare thing was from other post - It appears that most people don't have an issue with it so I should be fine

I love Dell monitors. We use a lot at work for the finer colour based work we do.

However, if you're a gamer the 120Hz makes a fair bit of difference. I found the difference to be massive for the stuff I play. In a strange way, they make me want a proper CRT again *ducks*

Agent, I know what you mean about missing CRT response, but does 120Hz on a TN screen really make that much difference? Maybe I'm not a serious enough online gamer for it to matter. Since my net connection has been reduced to a 3G dongle with its erratic latency gaming online has been impossible. I find the 60Hz IPS just fine.

Re new or old Dell model - take a look at info on tftcentral. I don't think the new one will be that amazing compared to the old one. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/news_arc...tm#dell_u2414h it has a worse screen size for a start! 16:9 instead of 16:10

Short version as it's late: Yes, for me.

It's hard to explain, it's certainly something you need to experience. When I played on one for a few hours it was a "oh, this is nice" reaction. Then you go back to a normal 60Hz one and it's a case of "Wow, is it really this bad?".
It reminds me of how quickly you get used to a SSD and then use a friends old, slow non-SSD system and it drives you insane.

The type of game matters though. I like fast FPS games, with a high frame rate. You really notice it there. On strategy games not so much. On the desktop, somewhat - snapper window movement but hardly worth a premium for.

I think they need to drop in price a bit more personally, but I can't knock the tech. It's not CRT level don't get me wrong, but I don't suspect we'll see that again soon, although OLED should offer an improvement.

He actually doesn't do a bad job at explaining it.

Re: Monitor for New Build - Benq XL2411T or Dell U2412M or Other

I once had an argument with someone about CRT vs LCD, and then seeing it repeated on the gadget show

I am still quite torn between 144hz Benq and the Dell - I think I am edging towards the Dell P2414H due to the following review by TFTCentral

    From TFTCentral -
The Dell P2414H currently retails for ~£212 GBP (inc VAT) putting it at a very similar cost to the older U2412M (£215). To be honest, this new model felt like a worthy replacement to the U2412M offering some noticeable performance improvements as well as positive changes like lighter AG coating and a flicker free backlight.

Things are still pretty volatile in the graphics card world so I am holding off buying my PC until the end of the month - so there is still time to change my mind on the monitor front.

Thanks for all your advice guys

Have a look at this: http://www.extrahardware.com/article...ng-dell-u2412m

It's a 16:10 the same as the dell U2412M, it doesn't flicker, it's apparently got better image quality and it claims faster response times.
The build quality may not be quite as good though.
    It's worth considering I'd say

    Its worth a thought - the 16:10 vs 16:9 doesn't worry me a great deal (although I'm using a 16:10 currently)

The Dell P2414H is also flicker free much like the BenQ BL2411PT suggested. Both seem to be an improvement on the U2412M though.

This is a difficult decision. Just decided to take the plunge on a 780 and im now looking at a new monitor. My initial reaction was to go bigger in terms of resolution, but everything i read points me to higher refresh rates. Makes me doubt my initial gpu purchase and whether its overkill now for 1080p (if that's what gamers should be doing)

Re: Monitor for New Build - Benq XL2411T or Dell U2412M or Other

For me personally, I can't tell the difference between 1MS response time and 10 - I would personally go with a 1080p IPS panel - it just depends on the size you want. LG do some really nice ones.

A 60 Hz monitor (as you probably know) will limit the output to 60 FPS (I think) to your eyes. A 120 Hz would limit it to 120 FPS. If the graphics card's minimum frame rate is less than 60 and you're using a 60 Hz monitor with V-Sync, you will experience stuttering (I do). You'll most likely get a smoother experience with a 120 Hz monitor, and better colour accuracy with IPS.

Thanks for the feedback guys - My mind is finally made up - I'm going for the Dell P2414H - its got the LG 23.8" AH-IPS monitor in it with positive reviews (of the two I've seen at least). Roll on Tuesday for the R9 290 launch and some more positive reviews and I will have finalised my build.
