Best Value monitor for video editing?

    Hi,

I'm about to add another monitor as the BenQ TFT I have, while great for the price 3 years back, really doesn't cut it when it comes to colour rendering and fidelity.
It'll be used for video editing and I'm doing more colour grading lately which has prompted me to finally invest in something better. No point in trying to colour correct on a monitor that can't display the colour properly in the first place!

I can't afford to spend silly money on fully professional monitors so I'm looking at around £150ish - maybe a bit more if needs be. I'm looking to get the best colour reproduction, gamma etc I can get for my money.

From my own research the Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM seems a good buy at around £160. I've seen the 23" Asus PA238Q ProArt available for about £195. This is more than I wanted to spend but if its its worth the extra then I might spring for it.

What are your thoughts/suggestions? (feel free to suggest other makes/models)

    Thanks.

The PA238Q is a good monitor but had its share of QC problems in the past,so it might be worth checking to see if the issues have been solved. The Dell is a good monitor but from what I gather the Asus uses an 8 bit IPS panel instead of a 6 bit panel with dithering.

Re: Best Value monitor for video editing?

Thanks CAT - that article is really helpful and confirms the Dell as a good buy. Good stand and the USB hub is a nice extra.
Those AOC ones looked half decent too. Its amazing the quality you can get for £120 these days.

I see some people have reported backlight issues on the Asus along with a noise when you lower brightness so I'm going off that.
Its factory calibrated which is nice but I really don't want the aggravation of having to RMA it though so I'm leaning towards the Dell. I'd rather spend an hour with the settings on the Dell than wait for a new Asus if I got a bad one. Not to mention save cash.

Re: Best Value monitor for video editing?

Well the Dell 2312HM arrived this morning and I'm pretty pleased with it so far. Was so simple to set up and the adjustability (is that a word?) of it is brilliant. It feels really well put together. The built in USB hub is very handy too.

I went through some simple calibration with it and the initial results are really good. Checking some videos and pictures really demonstrated its superiority over my BenQ TFT. Colours are vibrant and with great levels of contrast and detail.

Oh and the menus are really user friendly.

Had a quick game on War Thunder as well and that had a much richer look to it.

Obviously its early days but so far so good

Re: Best Value monitor for video editing?

The Dell is not a bad choice and the colour is well set up even out of the box, the 6 Bit +FRC v 8 bitis not a real issue with the Dells, in fact when the predecessors in the U23xx range were released the testers thought they were 8 bit panels and were surprised when they found out they were 6 bit.
