Looking for a source swapping solution

I'm not sure which way to solve this but I'm interested in any suggestions. I run a pair of Dell screens which, until recently, have been ideal. The only issue is swapping input sources on them. It's a 5 or 6 click process involving at least 2 hardware buttons on the bezel.

Before these I had an LG that was great for this as it had a dedicated button that meant toggling between the VGA and DVI was a single click.

Replacing a perfectly good panel just for this seems like overkill so is there another option? Doable with a breakout box or software? Failing that can anyone recommend a 21-22" panel with easy input switching?

Can you not just leave it on 'Auto' for the source and turn the main computer off / disable the screen in Windows? You don't want the two computers outputting to the same screen at the same time anyway.

A switching box wouldn't work as they don't mix DVI and VGA.

Re: Looking for a source swapping solution

The main PC will always be live on screen #1, it's the 'other stuff' that I throw onto #2 that I need to steal focus when connected. Otherwise #2 should be a 2nd screen for the main system.

Obviously just now #2 doesn't change because even if VGA connects, DVI is still active. I've not dealt with any software/script that could change the setup to allow that suggestion you made. Any recommendations?

Re: Looking for a source swapping solution

If you're using Windows then it's just a few clicks to disable a screen. (Windows 7) Right click on the desktop and select "Screen Resolution". Select the second screen and disconnect it. If you've got your graphics card driver toolkit then this can usually be done by right clicking on the icon in the taskbar.

If that's too much clicking then head to PC World and have a play with a few screens.

VGA>DVI adapter + DVI switch box?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Port-DVI...p2054897.l4275

Only downside is that the ports are DVI-I (they will have to be essentially to pass through VGA) so won't do dual-link DVI, although that isn't an issue for you with the monitors you currently have.

Re: Looking for a source swapping solution

as Shaithis says you're lookin for a port switcher, I've used one myself in the past for years until I no longer needed my second PC. Essentially just search 2 port DVI switch on eBay and you'll find a ton of results.
