Most reviews about the actual panel itself seem very positive, head over to ocuk forums where a few people already have one (shipped from Korea) and they have given their own personal opinions. It was on that Forum that Gibbo pointed out how closely they are working with Samsung and how they should be getting the first batch into the country in late May.

Re: 4K Monitor Comparison - which is the best 4K monitor?

Is anyone using a 4k TV (ie 55"+) as their monitor?

I've been using a 40" 1080 screen for almost five years and thinking of getting a 4k screen to replace it this year.

    If so... does anyone know:
    - How good the upscaling would be if I fed it a lower resolution (to keep performance up)
    - Whats the minimum level of graphics card I'd need to get to power a bit of flight simulator action? I was thinking of an AMD 290 (my rig has a 4670k as an FYI)
    - Does the graphics card act as a soundcard these days and pass audio over the HDMI? (dumb question probably)
    - Are graphics cards now on HDMI 2.0?

    Cheers!

Re: 4K Monitor Comparison - which is the best 4K monitor?

    In answer to your questions:

1080p should scale perfectly, because it will turn every pixel into 4, maintaining the aspect ratio. Other resolutions may look dreadful.
Minimum level of graphics card I'll leave to your other thread
Graphics card will pass audio through HDMI
No, HDMI 2.0 isn't happening. You'll need to use DisplayPort for 4K - make sure the TV can take a 60Hz signal if you want to game.

Re: 4K Monitor Comparison - which is the best 4K monitor?

Something like a 780 or 290/x will be plenty good enough for gaming on a 4K monitor, simply because I think 1080p gaming looks good enough - until we have a single chip card that can power 4k like graphics cards can power 1080p today, I'll continue to play in 1080p. The 760 offers fantastic value for money, and plays all the games I play in 1080p no problem.

Not sure - the Dell is 8-bit, the NEC claims to be between 10-bit.

Hmm OK looks like 4k@60hz is only over display port, so is looking more like the Dell, in which case, I'll wait :/

With the speed of change happening in the 4K market I would wait for 4k monitors with DP 1.2a connections.

Re: 4K Monitor Comparison - which is the best 4K monitor?

My U28D590D has just shipped from Amazon, total cost £400. If it's rubbish, I'm going to be gutted, because right now it's looking like a bargain.

EDIT: I've updated the table - we've seen some big price cuts on the 31.5" monitors, although the Dell is still the cheapest at £1500 and that's not exactly cheap.

Re: 4K Monitor Comparison - which is the best 4K monitor?

I have been looking at the 4k table recently, and seeing IGZO listed on the last few monitors is making me wonder just what it is, so what exactly are the IGZO panels?

How does IGZO differ from IPS and TN panels?

Would I be better off skipping IPS in favour of IGZO?

    *** edit ***

This link has an explanation of IGZO and a video by NCIX Techtips showcasing the Asus PQ321Q 32" IGZO based IPS monitor.

Yes, it wasn't easy to find a good answer when I created this thread and the bulk of sources treated IGZO as distinct from IPS.

So, effectively, from your information, those 31.5" panels are IPS?

It looks like IGZO can be any panel type, so as far as I can tell both the 31.5" Dell and Asus are running the same Sharp IPS panels. The Asus offers speakers but other than that the specs are the same on both screens.

When I read that there had been some big price cuts I started reaching for my wallet, but then I saw that the cuts weren't big enough!

I would've loved one, but they're far too expensive. It would need to be something like 50% for it to become even a consideration.

Also, the 31.5" panels are actually two panels stitched together (in terms of how they're seen by the computer) which sucks.

Ah, that explains some of the comments in video reviews, so it looks like 28" is the sweet spot at the moment, which is good, it feels like I'm making progress.
