Question about 5ms and 2ms response time on monitors

As the title state's really! is there much difference if any for gaming on a monitor with a 2ms response time compared to a monitor with a 5ms response time?

Depends upon how they calculate it and what it means. Try to find out what the slowest response time is. The number they quote could be the quickest or average. 5ms is equivalent to 200Hz and 2ms is 500Hz.

Are the figures with things like overdrive on which is more likely to cause ghosting because of overshoot.

Ugh That just serves to confuse people due to the Hz refresh rate being a separate thing.

I've seen some manufacturers list the same panels in different screens at 2/5ms, so don't read into it too much. Other technologies such as 120Hz (or above) and G-sync will make a huge difference in comparison to the 2/5ms difference, if there is one.

I was going to go that but I didn't have time to finish properly.

By itself none, because a manufacturer just saying 2ms or 5ms response almost never has any relation to the real response time. Look at a site like tftcentral for some real world tests and pick your monitor accordingly. If actually the case, then a faster response time to a certain point helps reduce motion blur or image trails, but beyond that point you need other technologies like strobed backlights to further reduce motion blur.

Comparing an IPS 60hz 8ms g2g screen to a TN 144hz 2ms g2g (being driven at 144hz) you would probably notice clearer movement and less tearing/input lag.

Re: Question about 5ms and 2ms response time on monitors

    Is there a difference between 60fps and 51fps? That's 3ms too.

This is equivalent to the recent Asus 290X vs the Gigabyte 770, and people are prepared to pay an extra £215 for that.
OK so it's slightly more complicated than that..
