    Question Monitor input connections?

    Hi,

Has anyone ever come across a flat screen monitor with a small 5 pin DIN socket for the graphic input?

I am talking here about a PS/2 type socket, as used for mice & keyboard connections.

A friend of mine is convinced that he has one, but it is something completely new to me!

    Thanks.

    Re: Monitor input connections?

No, I can't say I've ever heard of a that style of monitor connection. It's possibly a proprietary connector though. Do you know the make & model number of the monitor?

Thanks for your reply... I had never heard of it before either, and a bit of Googling' didn't help either... hence my question!

I will try and find out a bit more about the monitor, which is actually owned by a friend of mine who I am trying to assist with a system upgrade.

    Re: Monitor input connections?

    Sure it's 5, not 4?

    4 might be an S-video connector - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video

I've seen 5 pin DINs used for additional signal carrying, but not as the only display input.

It would be unusual to have such an old analogue connection on a flat panel monitor, but it's possible...

Ah... you could well be right there!

He just said that it was a PS/2 type connector, and I (probably incorrectly) assumed it to be a 5 pin, but the fact that he also mentioned that there wouldn't be any sound does indeed make your suggestion of a S-video connector seem that bit more feasible.

He also said that an HDMI to 'whatever input this is' cable was also available, but that looks very unlikely to me at the moment anyway.... but who knows!

Edit: On looking at the wikipedia article again it mentions that s-video is an analog video connector, which I assume means that it couldn't be fed from a digital, or HDMI, output anyway?

    Re: Monitor input connections?

Well, you learn something new every day - here's one monitor with s-video:

Couldn't be fed from digital, correct. But DVI can be analogue, and I presume cards could push analogue signals through HMDI too no problem if they were designed to (my sound card does for eg).

The problem here is that he is proposing to utilise a small 'compact' system, such as an Intel NUC where the graphic output comes directly from the incorporated GPU.

I have a feeling that the best way forward here is for him to buy a new monitor, as I can't see an easy way to get s-video out of something like an Intel NUC.... unless anyone on here can tell me how?

Thanks also to Jimbobgod1969 for finding that monitor... as he says, there is always something new to learn, especially where computing is concerned!

    Re: Monitor input connections?

You could use a box that converts digital video signal from hdmi to s-video. Probably cheaper than a new monitor.. but to be honest if a monitor is old enough to be using S-video input then his eyes will thank you for suggesting he replaces it.

    Re: Monitor input connections?

I think you are right there... I haven't checked the maximum resolution of the 'old' monitor, but I wouldn't think that it is up to modern standards.

Definitely time for an upgrade, I reckon!
