Looking for a new IPS monitor!

    Hello!

I'm in the market for an IPS 1920x1080 monitor. I would like it to be around 24". As said, my budget is around 200 USD and hopefully I can find something in that price range.

I will mostly be using the monitor for gaming, not FPS, as well as watching movies. I've looked at the Dell 2312HM, but I'm not really sure which specs is important on a monitor! The monitor will be paired with a GTX 770. I've heard good things about the ASUS monitors as well, but again, I am not sure what to look after!

I have also looked at the ASUS PB238Q as well as the ASUS VN248H-P

I can't link to the monitors since Hexus won't allow me to do it, but I hope you can find the monitors anyways!

    Thanks in advance!

If the dell 23 is in your price range then go for that (this is a UK based site). I kept my 2311 as a second monitor after upgrading to a 27" and sold my other 2 lg ips screens. Very good monitor will good adjustable stand.

Re: Looking for a new IPS monitor!

Specs really aren't that important on monitors - they very rarely tell you much about the quality of the monitor.

I would highly recommend http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ as a place to get good information on the quality of screens - they review all their panels very thoroughly and give a much more valuable assessment than specs do.

Personally, I always opt for Dell monitors where possible - they've always been very reliable for me and well-reviewed. The only reason to avoid them is if you prefer a gloss coating as opposed to Dell's favoured anti-glare matte coating. As such, I would highly recommend the 2212HM/2312HM (I own two of the former).

I agree with Jim about reading reviews. Don't be taken in by marketing mumbo-jumbo like dynamic contrast.

How urgently do you need a new monitor? Your graphics card can play games at a higher resolution than 1080p quite comfortably. My impression is the market is moving up from 1080p and higher resolution monitors are already becoming more affordable. $200 certainly won't get you anything at the moment, but if don't need anything urgently, waiting and saving up a bit might net some nice returns. I've always felt monitors are something worth spending a bit more on. After all, it's what you actually spend most of your time looking at!

Re: Looking for a new IPS monitor!

Okay, thanks a lot guys! Didn't know that this was a UK based site and I just write 200 USD because most people know the value of dollars! I am actually buying from Denmark, and I'm pretty sure no one knows how much a "krone" is worth compared to pounds/dollars.

Sounds really good with the Dell monitors. I guess the U2312HM is the way to go! I've read the review by tftcentral and they seemed to like it a lot as well. I've read a review where the reviewer says that the colors are just awful if you choose to go with the calibrations that comes out of the box. Is it any hard to calibrate this monitor? I don't own any hardware to do so, but can it be done with software/using the menus on the monitor itself?

Yet again, thanks a lot guys!

Well, I am ordering the parts for my PC later today, and I currently do not own a monitor at all since I am moving from a MacBook Pro. So I need one pretty bad! But if I decide to get a 2560x1440 monitor at some point, I can just use the one I order now as a secondary monitor?

Ah. So you need one pretty urgently! Hummm... If you are from Denmark, can you order from UK websites? I've come across one called nrgit on the bit-tech forums which sells refurbished Dell monitors. Never bought from them before, but I saved the site for when I upgrade my monitor. Worth a bit of investigation I think.

Yes, I can order from UK stores, but it wouldn't make much sense in this case since the refurbished monitors are at around the same price point as new ones here in Denmark. I'll just get the U2312HM and then probably get a nicer monitor at some point!
