Will the average gamer / home user be able to tell? Will it be worth the cost? We don't know yet :)
Yet for the target markets which would benefit the most it is more likely Freesync will be found in monitors under £200 eventually and laptops than G-Sync.
Hence,at least looking at literally everyone I know who games,G-Sync is of little use ATM until the cost drops massively.
Re: 4K monitors going cheap - what's the catch?
Oh yes, absolutely, some monitors with G-sync seem to be dropping a little thankfully.
I really hope there is no perceivable difference between the two, but I think it's probably a bit of wishful thinking. The cost speaks for itself though. Anything for nothing is always a massive plus.
Re: 4K monitors going cheap - what's the catch?
The other aspect is the consoles. Freesync might end up being "ported" onto them if newer TVs support adaptive v-sync.
Edit!!
Might not be possible with the current consoles,but future revisions might have displayport.
Re: 4K monitors going cheap - what's the catch?
Some time has passed since I last wrote in this thread but I have noticed that Scan have this 40 inch Philips BDM4065UC monitor for £665.28 Inc VAT on preorder. I know that's a lot of money but it seems justifiable considering the fact that a 28 inch is 330-ish. On a 40 inch monitor one could probably explore the full quality of 4k without a magnifying glass I assume. What do you think?
Re: 4K monitors going cheap - what's the catch?
Seems an interesting option to me. I use 4K over 28" at home, and whilst I'm OK with it, it's definitely very very small text. I think at 40", 4K is similar to normal monitor DPI. Obviously it would be huge on a desk but I think it could look great in game. Not so sure about desktop work given the neck requirements, but you never know.

The Philips comes at a Pixel Pitch of 0.2281 for a 40" 4K screen. A 27/28" 2560 x 1440 panels have a Pixel Pitch of 0.2331 so if you have a 2560 x 1440 panel it should give you an idea what to expect when reading text. For me a 2560 x 1440 Resolution is just about ok for reading text and should be on a 40" 4K.
Re: 4K monitors going cheap - what's the catch?
@Jim
I was thinking about the viewing angle, too. Perhaps 40 inch may need a special setup to keep the upper frame at eye level. Ah well, 32/34 inch would be the biggest monitor allowing this without desk modification I guess.
@shamus21
Thanks for bringing the point. I had the same idea , its just that on 27 everything seems small to me and messing with fonts dpi only brings up new issues.
EDIT:
Actually it seems that if the monitors are in the lowest position the difference between 32 inch Benq and 40 inch Philips is around 4 inches.
Also in my very inaccurate calculations a 40 inch sitting on the desk will have its top frame at a maximum of 2 inches from eye level if you are in a perfectly straight posture which may not be that bad, would it? Perhaps a VESA stand or equivalent may be used to lower it further down?
I am not quite sure about the horizontal distance to the face though since this monitor is huge. So a deeper desk may need to be purchased to keep you away from the monitor /do they even make such desks/?
What do you think?
