    Monitor choice

    hi

i am nearly ready to buy a new monitor followinf my house completion tomorrow, but i'm not sure what i should get.

i use it for office work, internet, gaming - FPS, footy manager, sim city types, but i want a good sized desktop for multi tasking etc

what would be best going forward:

    1) ultrawide 34" like the LG or maybe 30-32 would probably do.
    2) 4K 27-28" monitor
    3) 28" IPS full HD/1440p monitor
    4) 2 x 24"/27" monitors

my new computer room will be 3mtr squared room and the computer desk will be an L shaped to enable work and system building etc and storage. the desk will probably by 2.5mtr at it's longest and 800-1000 mm wide.

    Re: Monitor choice

Can of worms right there! There have been a lot of threads recently on the Ultrawides and the budget 4K panels, and the benefits and pitfalls of each.

In short, HEXUS.community doesn't really have a consensus yet (and probably won't!). The budget 4K panels are much cheaper than the ultrawides, but are TN. The 1440p monitors are similar to the 4K ones price-wise, but whilst you lose in res you gain in IPS. And dual-1080p is still a great budget option, and as the added benefit of being really easy to multitask on (i.e. 4 aero snap windows).

    Re: Monitor choice

Best would be a 4K, 144hz IPS or better display with freeSync.

    Sadly, they don't exist yet.

Until then, you have to pick your compromise - colours vs refresh rate/freeSync vs 4K

I would argue that 4K displays aren't quite ready yet - more from the windows/GPU side than the actual displays themselves, 1440p is a good upper end in place of them in the meantime. FreeSync/GSync also isn't quite there yet, and again 144hz is the closest at the moment if driven well.

But you can't have 144hz and IPS either, so choice comes down to which is more important to you - the best TN displays are pretty good on colours for casual use, only if you are doing something where you definitely need high colour accuracy would I say you *have* to avoid TN.

So.. in your situation I'd go with a 28" 1440p and either IPS or a 144hz TN depending on what my balance of FPS was vs other game types was. Bear in mind that to get the advantage of 144hz on a 1440p display you need to be driving a lot of pixels very quickly indeed - if you aren't planning on running an extremely beefy GPU setup then the argument swings back towards IPS.

    Re: Monitor choice

I'd go with a 1440p 27 Inch or 32 Inch monitor. I've got my eyes on BenQ's 32 Inch QHD monitor. VA panel so decent viewing angles and colours yet better response than IPS.

    Re: Monitor choice

thanks guys, definately some good advice there.

my GPU is a R9 280x asus card and i'm thinking or crossfiring it with another, not sure yet. the graphical work is only spreadsheets and word docs and looking and editing photo's - can't say i do much of that at the moment. my previous monitor was a LG 1080p IPS 23" monitor and it was lovely. good in games like tomb raider and crysis 3. my GPU was only a 7850 2 gig card then so my new gpu should be even better.

still considering the 32/34" TN model's as not sure i need 4k yet. overclockers have a nice hazro 30" s-ips 2560 x 1600 10 bit monitor for £360 del today.

    Re: Monitor choice

I really do think this depends on what you like in a monitor. Personally, I can't stand TN so I would be inclined to agree with kalniel. I've also heard about some issues with scaling in Windows on 4k monitors and 1440 still looks really nice and gives you plenty of room to work with.

But really, it's different from one person to the next.

When they are IPS panels then I will agree.

I would go for the 30 inch one you saw on overclockers it really is a good deal for lots of real estate.

    Re: Monitor choice

34" is to big so i'm going to settle with the 29" LG widescreen and my budget has reduced as well.

    Re: Monitor choice

i opted for the 29" in the end and wow, lovely monitor. just need a gaming session to check for bleed. getting used to the real estate is proving fun. good colours though.

    Re: Monitor choice

Awesome, I went with a 2560x1440 and can't tell the difference really between that and 1080p, but colours are a million times better, as well as viewing angles. I've migrated away from TN on every device now (phone, monitor and laptop) and could never go back.
