That AOC looks to be a decent bet I suspect.

Does one have to go 1ms for a gaming monitor? What is the minimum ms one should aim for?

The lowest possible if you're gaming (typically meaning first person shooter or other large screen movement games.)

Like a lot of manufacturer specs the response time has a pretty tenuous connection to reality so it can pretty much be ignored. If you are unusually sensitive to ghosting, or particularly annoyed by it, you definitely want to be checking reviews to see what the situation is in reality as different monitors with the same manufacturer response time can differ substantially.

I think I'd personally go with an IPS or MVA panel, but at that price and for gaming purposes, I agree with Cat - it looks like a good choice.

AOC is a good monitor, I have got one at moment whilst I save up for a new Benq and I have been really impressed so far.

I had the AOC G2460PF and it was a good monitor for the price (even better now they have fixed the overdrive function at 144hz) but don't go expecting miracles in colour reproduction - this was my biggest quibble with the monitor.

If you'd like to see it in action, my video review of it is here:

ok so it's time to come out from behind the sofa! Sorry for the lack of communication this past week, we have been doing our best to resolve this issue and can now tell you...

    1. Overdrive issue. It’s officially fixed now with a new firmware. Today we have started the rework of our G2460PF stock and it will be delivered to all retailers in Europe within the next two weeks. Of course, our warranty will cover the replacement for end users who bought a G2460PF from the first batch.

    2. FreeSync range. The G2460PF does support 35-144Hz when using FreeSync. This week we are releasing an official driver that will improve the current FreeSync range to 35-144Hz. If you just Plug & Play the monitor, without installing any drivers, Windows will set it up at 50-144Hz. The driver will be uploaded on aoc-europe.com before the end of the week.

    I hope this helps

you have quite a good system that would deserve a better monitor but if 200 is your budget than something like the BenQ XL2411Z would work well for gaming, tftcentral has a nice long review about it
