When did monitors (1440p) get so expensive?

I'm looking to move up to 1440p after spending some time on my cousins laptop, but why are they so expensive?

I'm pretty sure I bought my 1080p monitor for under £100 and 1440p are up around £300? It's not like the resolution is brand new (4K), and even so there are 4K panels that are around the £300 mark.

Is this a supply and demand issue which is pushing the resolution up in price, or are 1440p monitors just better compared to a 4K monitor which you can scale down?

After seeing the prices, I might end up going for a 4K panel and downscaling to 1440p until I upgrade my GPU that can handle 4K.

it is not only about resolution, there are some very important other factors, like panel type and refresh rate. I'd take a 144hz IPS 1440p over a 4k 60hz monitor any day of the week.

Re: When did monitors (1440p) get so expensive?

I think they just failed to come down to less than £300.

The 4K panels have dropped in price faster, probably through use in TVs. That is bound to be why the 1080p panels are so cheap, there are a lot of 24" 1080p TVs out there using the same technology.

Re: When did monitors (1440p) get so expensive?

I've found a few TN based panels at the £220 mark but for a variety of reasons they wont get much cheaper. Firstly 1440p is not as mass produced as 1080p. Outside of non casual gaming, photo editing, work etc... 1080p suits the general populous for browsing and emails. 1440p doesn't receive media attention unlike 1080p and 4k as they are also TV standards, so less people know about 1440p.
A lot of the cheap 1080p monitors are just plain awful for long periods of use, gaming and video. Lots of lag and ghosting.

    A good 1080p will be £200+

However, it ultimately boils down to what you're eyes are comfortable with, if you're ok with ghosting and lag or cant see it then a cheap panel of any resolution will be fine. Similarly if accurate colours aren't a requirement a cheap panel will do.

Have a look around see if you can bag a Dell UltraSharp U2713HM - A few years old now but it's a superb monitor:

IPS as well as the stronger dollar have led to price increases for most high end monitors

I would have thought a TV using a 1440p panel would look very nice indeed.

Anyone who has tried plugging a PC into the HDMI port of a TV knows that they usually scale everything plugged in by 5% anyway, plus a lot of HD content is just 720p scaled up. I would have thought that scaling up into more pixels would be a good thing.

So I'm surprised they don't sell them as "FullHD Plus" or some such marketing nonsense.

If I would be getting 4k display I would probably go with Seiki
I know that cheap Chinese manufacturer does not sounds good, but for good budget 4k tv it is the best what you can get

I would prefer TN if all these new monitors are plagued by QC, IPS glow, Backlight bleed, Premium pricing for rubbish, The new Dell gaming monitor looks good.

I understand that was only on some earlier Gsync models, IIRC from Acer. Certainly the current ones (including the replacement Acer my friend got) are utterly awesome and I am 'jelly' as heck of them!!

Re: When did monitors (1440p) get so expensive?

Having just bought a fancy nvidia graphics card I'm now looking at 1440p Gsync monitors.

I better just knock 50% off the price if I want to mention it to my wife.

You'll get quite bad bleeding with TN as well. The first BenQ (XL2420t) I tried had very bad bleeding sent it back for an ASUS, same issue with bleeding but the BenQ was by far the better monitor between the 2 I was interested in. Luckily the 2nd BenQ of the same model I received had very little bleeding so I kept it.

You'll find a few forum posts on OCuK about how some people would keep returning the BenQ until they got one with acceptable bleed levels.

Panel type is generally more important when analysing the price! IPS/PLS is generally the most expensive. TN panels are dirt cheap, but the viewing angles and colour consistency is really bad!

I wish they would bring back 16:10 monitors.
