I've got x3 vertical 24" 1920x1200 (so 3600x1920) monitors at work - it's fantastic. But I work more and more at home, where my rig is geared towards gaming, with two twitcher friendly 23" 1080 HD displays.

I miss my vertical resolution from work. The ideal then is to get a 4K ~40" curved monitor for home.

I couldn't use this for gaming though, as I don't fancy investing in the hardware to run 4K on high settings, or getting disorientated having to look around the screen all the time. So I'd keep a smaller 23" HD screen for gaming, and the bit one for productivity. No need for high refresh and responsiveness... or maybe there is. Playing games like Elite or Civ on a big screen sounds awesome - sure my kit can't do that at high quality today, but I expect the next round of graphics cards will allow it.

Finding a 4K 40" curved screen with a good static contrast ratio (VA looks good), reasonable refresh rate and reasonable input lag seems like an impossibility.

So, reaching out here, has anybody done anything similar, or have any suggestions?

Don't forget 4k is 4 x 1080p so you can scale 1080p to 4K without jaggies. Use 4K for your productivity stuff and just select 1080p in your games video settings.

Curveball... could look at ultrawide to cover everything.

There is some 3840 x 1600 models rearing their head in the market which are awesome... but expensive. Almost the same as your previous resolution with 3 seperate screens.

You could wait for hdmi 2.1 to drop and go for a moderately priced 55inch 4k telly. A lot of the more decent telles in the last 2 years or so have also input of between 20-30ms.

I did start looking down the TV route, but finding out what actually is in a tele is tricky - the manufacturer specs rarely include details like static contrast, lag and what not. And it's a lot of money to sink in on a whim.

I think Biscuit, you're probably closer to reality, ultrawide, and just put up with the loss of vertical space - but as you say, that's a whole lot of money for ultrawide - and as it would be gaming, you'd want to do it right.

Dell were selling a 35" Alienware gaming ultrawide (120hz) at almost half price a few days ago, still might be.

I've hovered over the buy button on many occasions, but I think im going to wait till they release a panel with 100Hz+ Freesync.

Ah missed out. £1100 now. Which is insane money.

Which brings me back round to the generally "slightly rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishty" 40" 16:9 monitors. They're around £500, which is still extreme, but far more appealing to the wallet.

40" 4K curved is ideal, VA, non-gaming. Just like the Phillips. The problem is the reviews are dire, the VA panel is an old panel and scrolling text (which happens a lot with my work loads) is awful due to smearing. So that's kinda out of the window I think.

35" 21:9 is the next obvious choice, but that would have to be my display for gaming and work. So that needs to be good, and that means looking at £1000 and still getting VA smearing.

From looking around, HDR looks like a nice to have that won't be practical on PCs for a long time. Games might look nice, but where it would really be useful is photo editing, and no apps support HDR output. But perhaps I should wait a year...

The big 1600p ultrawides have smaering?

VA panels do, ViewSonic do an IPS one, but that's low fps etc.

Alas, not curved, when working on your desk curved makes a significant difference. These are great for on the wall console gaming etc, but not so good for productivity, and as you say, poor colour accuracy, no good for photo work.

And this is what I'm finding everywhere, it's all about compromise, I guess I need to decide what I'm willing to compromise on - or just leave it as is (which is the cheaper option!).

I really would avoid korean monitor due to the crap warranty
