Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
Hi all.
Not looked into monitors for quite a while. Last time was when sub-16ms refresh rate was considered good. Current monitor is a 10year old 1080p LED monitor that cost maybe 100 quid new. Would like to buy a 27" 4k 144hz HDR IPS monitor, but can´t afford it. What features should I actually aim for for not too much more than 200 quid?
Graphics card is a gen1 Titan with HDMI and display port 1.2, which may be changed for a 3060 or NAVI2 equivalent in maybe 6 months, if out and affordable.
Usage is general home/office work. And gaming-most stuff. But not online FPS. Not photoshop where colour matching matters.

Only you can say what's worth it. You've got a tight budget so I wouldn't be going for 4k (especially without upgrading to an expensive GPU). Pick either a high refresh rate 1080p monitor or a low refresh 1440p. Go 24" for the former, 27" for the latter. Given office work I'd probably pick a 1440p 27".

Going to be high priced if you want 4K 144hz + HDR.
Edit : Sorry didn't read post properly.
If you are not too bothered about the refresh rate you can get 4K HDR with freesync and 1ms response time for £151 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/electriQ-...r/132703055097
Though not sure of the brand

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
I think 4k will be too expensive. I've two monitor one's Full HD and the other one is 2K. I got the 2K from a friend who gave it to me for like 150 quid. But he bought it for 500 or 600, so I guess today that's what you pay for 4k monitors, that works properly. Both are acer monitors, which I'm quite happy with.
You should think of what is more important to you. Getting Full HD or more or getting 27" or less. For gaming actually 24" is considered better than 27". But I personally like 27" better.
Also if you're not in a hurry to buy a monitor, I suggest you to wait for black friday or cyber monday maybe you will get even a 4k monitor with your budget.
I looked for a good article I could only find a german one, but it has a ranking so if you're intersted, it presents four 27" monitors that should be good and under 200 euros. https://www.technikhiwi.de/27-zoll-m...7_Zoll_Monitor

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
You are working with a very tight budget. I would suggest checking out places like hotukdeals where lots of offers on monitors get shared. Not every offer is a good one but they are very good at sharing ways to stack discount codes and things like that to eke out the most bang for your buck possible.
Is your budget £250 or €250?
At that price you can probably get a very solid 24" 1080p panel. If you go larger and/or higher resolution you will sacrifice functionality.
Another place to check out is Amazon Warehouse deals if you are happy with a monitor that isn't brand new. They are covered by warranty from Amazon and you have DSR to return a monitor you receive you aren't happy with. Most of the online retailers also have b-grade stock and clearance offers from time to time. Worth considering these as well if you want extra functionality at your budget.
I think at under £250 you can probably get a reasonable 1440p panel but don't expect more than 75hz refresh rate or HDR. I did see a Lenovo 4K 60Hz IPS monitor on Amazon recently at £229 but it has gone back up to £291. I didn't look in the monitor in any great detail though so can't comment on whether it was a good buy or not.

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
My last gaming monitor was a 24inch 1920x1080 165hz Gsync and that was awesome
So now I have decided to go with a 27inch 2560x1440 170hz Gsync
For your situation I think a 27 inch at least with either 4k or 1440p

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
Check out the Dell S2721D - at £220.
https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/dell...s#tabs_section
I'm "sort of" looking for a new monitor and this one came up as it's a 27" with an IPS panel, Freesync 48-75Hz rather than just 60Hz like most similarly priced monitors and 2560x1440 resolution. The claimed 350 Nits brightness is nothing special so no HDR but I think for HDR you'll need to spend at least another £100

Picked up an LG 27GL850-B a couple of months back and don't regret it. Best monitor I've ever used and I've got some high demands for photo editing and 3D work as well as games. Maybe price has dropped?

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
I'd say go for QHD (2560x1440) as the sweet spot for price and if you are not going super high end on GPU you may struggle at 4K. going 2.5k will allow you to up the visual fidelity and maintain better FPS than at 4k. In addition, 4k on a 27" display is super tiny. I have a 27". You should be able to get a decent 27" 2.5k monitor for that price. of the other features, nice to have would be the higher refresh rates and support for freesync etc.

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
james_ recommendation is a good one, but arguably has recently been surpassed by the Dell S2721DGF. The Dell is £390 at Currys, the LG 27GL850-B is £350 on pre-order from OCUK (stock due in 20 days at time of writing)
If you want a sub-£200 option the AOC 24G2 is your best option, it's a 24" 1080p 144Hz IPS screen, will be a good match for your current GPU, but underspecificed for an upgrade to something like the eventual RTX 3060 when it's released.

I'm "sort of" looking too, haha :p
Honestly buying a new monitor is the hardest thing ever :p (That and buying a new chassis.) Too much choice, and everything is a compromise, unless you spend $1000s (and maybe even then).
1440p/100+ Hz is my "must have". Current monitor is U2312HM (e-IPS). Fed up of 60Hz and not wealthy enough for high-refresh 4k with the monumental GPU demands that comes with (honestly a single 3090 probably isn't enough..)
Had a look at the 27" LG 850 and it seemed to tick most of the boxes. I'm just a bit fed up of IPS (glow) and the apparent lack of new technology coming along to replace IPS/VA which have been around forever. That said I'm sure the LG would be a massive upgrade. But it bloomin' well ought to be at £500 :p The 2312HM was about £150, and has been exceptional value. That said it was the 3rd time lucky for me, the first two were sent back with MASSIVE amounts of backlight bleed in the corners.
Will take a look at that Dell, and hope their QC has improved a bit in the meantime (tho they were really good for no-quibble returns, 10/10 for customer service).

Looking here as well, thinking QHD >144Hz..

Same boat as pretty much everyone, want to go 1400p, 120Hz+. Much prefer an IPS screen, 27" would be my sweet spot. I'm a student, so if anyone knows anywhere I could use a student discount to get a super-good offer that'd be great.

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
There's a couple ultrawide iiyama monitors that seem to be a good deal - though stretching the budget to 300ish. The only caveat seems to be to thoroughly research the monitor - some seem to come with strange bugs like massive input lag and some seem like the deal of the century.

I think Dell offer a student discount on monitors and they have the S2721HGF, just falls short on the resolution. Might be worth keeping an eye out though.

Re: Monitor- 4k/1440p/HDR/75hz/144hz/24"/27" etc. What´s actually worth it? €250ish
Word on the "street" is that you can just ask a Dell CSR online for the S2721DGFA for £280... and in the last few days they've just been agreeing to sell it at that price. All the time the web price has been ~£400.
I'm going to try my luck tomorrow :p

£390 monitor apparently, cant see you getting it for £280, bloody good deal if you can, my existing monitor is a Dell one they do make decent screens.
I'm looking at the iiyama G-Master GB2760QSU-B1 next, 144Hz, Free sync, 2560x1440, £270 from Amazon currently, will stick a price tracker on it and see if any deals come up, 27" was a bit bigger than I wanted to go as on 24" currently but whats an extra few inches eh :D

It's not a random price I've plucked out of thin air tho - this is the price people over at HotUkDeals have been getting by engaging a CSR on the website. Literally just "I'd like a discount on the xxxx" "Sure, how does £280 sound? OK, I'll send you an invoice by email with a link to pay."
And there are a *lot* of people who have already done this - the caveat being that they are all waiting until ~Feb 2021 for new stock to arrive, giving Dell plenty of time to cancel all the orders if they decide it's a "mistake".

Tried 3 times this afternoon and all of them flatly denied it had ever been sold at £280. Two of them quoted me a higher price than the website price, lol.
Then they closed their chat support 1.5 hours before the official closing time on the website ("Sun 8am to 5pm" - it's now 15:20). So I couldn't make any further attempt.

OK in total I tried 11 times, mostly getting different advisors.
A couple admitted that it was available until "a few days ago" but that the deal had been a "mistake" and was not returning.
The website price is £400 "down from £480" (lol).
I will not be buying one. Will wait for the AUO panels instead. Also I will not be buying Dell again. They told me not to use chat again, lol, as I was being a nuisance by repeatedly asking for the deal.

I had been hoping to get something for about £300, but it seems that is an "entry level" price these days.
I.e. you will still get really bad backlight bleed, low contrast, etc, at this price range.
Seems you need to spend £500+ to get something of real quality. I really do need to upgrade tho, 1080/60 is just horrid.
Back to the drawing board..

It's an option, but only if I learn to abandon my fear of spending money. :p
It's a fairly large step up in terms of GPU requirements, not to mention the monitor cost itself. Let's say you'd probably need a £600 GPU to drive that, eh?
Out of curiosity what 3440x1440 screen do you have? And was it your first ultrawide? And would you go back to non-UW?

I just picked up one of these: https://www.ebuyer.com/838555-eg-27-...eesync-gs27-v2
Looks good on paper, TN panel tho, I'm not that bothered about that tbh, works with G-sync too apparently
It should be here tomorrow!

So far so good!, no dead pixels as far as I can see, and it came on time! (box was a bit damaged tho), very bright, clear, night and day difference to my old BENQ GL2460HM, build quality is very good, it feels solid. I've not gamed on it much yet but freesync works, smooth as butter, a massive difference, GPU temps are now going through the roof as I used to game v-sync, frame limit 60fps. this ol Rx 580 8gb needs upgarding!, but then so does the rest of the system to run at 144hz! I'll get round to that next summer,
The bad so far... The stand, it's flimsy, but it will be going on the wall at some point anyway, I don't really know if this is a bad point, it's taxing the gpu hard! and plenty fan noise now, but then it's only a Rx 580, so it's to be expected I guess.
I'll give you another update in a couple of weeks after I've used it for a bit....
