Problems setting up Xbox 360 and XP PC for streaming media.

I went round to a mates today as he wanted to be able to stream his MP3's from his PC to his Xbox 360 and did not know what to do. I dont have an Xbox 360, but thought i knew enough about PC's to get it running for. How wrong was i.

A quick look at www.xbox.com/pcsetup showed that the connect software that used to be used has now had its duties replaced by WMP11. So as instructed i installed WMP11, went into the library media sharing settings, selected the Xbox 360 from the list of connected devices and hit enable.

Then went to the Xbox360, but the Xbox 360 could not detect the PC on the network.

Basically, the PC can see the Xbox 360 on the network but the Xbox 360 can't see the PC.

The Xbox is connected via ethernet to the Wanadoo router and the PC connects wirelessly to the router. Everything else on the network is working fine. I am fairly sure its not firewall related as the ports that need to be open already where and i have tried it with the firewall disabled completely.

I have had a quick google and it seems to be a common complaint, but i can find a solution anywhere.

Anyone here had similar issues or able to point us in the right direction???

I do believe there is some software you can buy that will let you stream any media from a media centre PC to a 360

afaik only WAV is supported...or at least MS only formats

You could try a different bit of software.

I use a program called TVersity, works a treat. Its dead easy to set up, the only thing you need to worry about is putting in the PCs IP address in the settings and once thats done as long as there is connectivity between the xbox and PC it'll work fine.

Theres a seporate thread on TVersity somewhere in this forum, its probably worth having a flick through there for ideas as well.

There's a test you can run (which I'm guessing tells you at which point the connections failing at) on the XBox Dashboard.

System tab, network options, media connection test (or something similar, not got my xbox on atm.)

Has he filled his media library using WMP11?

im guessing that even with TVersity, you still need media centre to stream videos?

im running winxp and when i tried to play a divx file the 360 would just crash =(

I could never get WMP11 sharing to work so I rolled back to WMP9 and used the standalone Windows Media Connect program

Tversity still needs the media connect service running so if the xbox cant see the pc it still wont see it with TVersity. Try the connection test thing like donut said. I've got TVersity running and working with WMP11 rather than the stand alone windows media connect but you could try that next.

JimmyBoy, you don't need MCE to get Divx working, just need to fiddle with the settings which can get frustraing at times, I still havent got all my media types working yet. My mp3 library goes through nicely though.

I don't have the media centre connect software installed on my machine which is the reason why I use TVsersity. The connect software doesn't work at all on my PC, it doesn't even install. Its an issue i've had for ages which was never resolved even after formats it does the same thing so I used TVersity instead.

So yeah... you don't need the connect software installed as it works just fine for me.

In TVersity under settings, the first one to try is to change the Media Device to Xbox360, this tells TVersity what its streaming too and so should send everything in WMA or WMV.

I just spoke to a work mate and they said it requires media connect to work so I may be wrong and its installed and im being silly.

Ill check tonight, its going to anoy me now. lol

If you are using Tversity you don't need Media Connect installed.

Tversity is great. Took a while to get it set up properly, had to uninstall WM11 reinstall, then uninstall all codecs then reinstall using ffdshow. Now works perfectly, can stream it seems any format video, on the fly encoding, no noticeable quality loss.

Only irritation is when a video ends you need to go back to the Xbox Dash to select another.

If you've got Media Centre can use Transcode 360, but tbh, Tversity is the best way, whatever system you are using.

its fine for pics music and a very select few videos, would the fact im streaming wirelessly to the xbox (which has the usb adaptor) be an issue??
