    Sid Meirs(sp): Railroads

    Anyone played it?

Just looking for a lil game to run in window mode that i can mess about in. I was playing railroad tycoon deluxe (opensourse) version of the old one... was nice and slow...

on a side note im thinking of sticking it on my server and turning the game time down reallllllllllllllllllly low, so money matters in it and you get to enjoy teh development of the big old network... plus i cant be arsed to spend years working out attacks and things in hearts of iron 2.

I don't think it would suit what you want to do with it. It's a bit light on detail, and when you expand your rail network it gets seriously cpu hungry. It got boring really quickly and there are some annoying issues with tracks. For starters you can't have separate networks, which makes life difficult when you have many trains on the lines. Not a total waste if you get it cheap, but it seems to be a step back from railroad tycoon...

Do you mean transport management specifically or just general economic game? I just bought Hotel Giant (from Game 3 for £10 or £4.99 on its own) - it seems to have a fair amount of depth and as its a bit old it won't trouble the pc performancewise. Its not a great looker, but can be quite challenging.

Startopia is a good management game too - also a bit old, but was quite good fun.

City life was alright, but got boring after a few maps (£10 from Game).

Completed Railroads. Lots of fun to while away the hours, but some definate issues with track placement and performance.

Not as good as railroad tycoon 3.

I played it, and like a few of sid's new games, it's fun, but simplified.

    Re: Sid Meirs(sp): Railroads

I didnt look about, but can you disable airplanes [in OpenTTD] ?
    Yes you can

If you want to just disable planes for the computer AI you can do so under
Configure Patches (on main menu) -> Competitiors -> Disable aircraft for computer
Or if you want to disable aircraft altogether (for multiplayer etc) set
Configure Patches -> vehicles -> max aircraft per player
    to zero

most of the online OpenTTD servers disbale planes because it is too easy and profitable compared to making train networks etc and is basically cheating

I'd also recommend Open TTD - loads of expansions, extras and can easily run on a second monitor, window (you name it). The only problem is that it is bloody addictive and you need to get your head around signals and such otherwise you'll end up with a huge mess and backlogs of trains etc...

Slightly off topic, but has anyone played the railroad tycoon board game? I recently went to a friends house and he introduced me to "Euro-gaming" - basically complex board games. I checked out a number of sites and there are some popular PC titles (civ, railroad tycoon, age of empires) that have been adapted for board games.
