    Eidos cranks up Steam power

Eidos Interactive has signed a deal with gaming firm Valve to deliver dozens of new and existing PC titles via the Steam digital download network.

The first agreement includes complete franchise sets of classics such as Tomb Raider, Commandos and some of the Hitman series.

Eidos will also be bringing Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Championship Manager 2007 and more to the service.

Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve, said: "Offering legendary action franchises in complete sets and working with Eidos to deliver new releases is a great step forward in our efforts to expand Steam's offerings in ways that provide highest value to customers."

Tom Marx, senior business development manager of new media at Eidos, added: "Steam represents an opportunity to distribute our games electronically to millions of gamers around the world."

"It also provides a direct connection to these extremely active PC influencers who frequent Steam as a source for new content and information."

"As a result of being a spotlight feature on Steam this year, we expect to see sales of Tomb Raider: Anniversary benefit across all channels."

it's taken longer than i expected, but steam is starting to have a competent selection of non-valve titles

While its good to see more and more games available online, generally for less than in stores, i'm still waiting for a really good distribution application.

Steam has reached the point now where it is 'OK', being fairly reliable these days and slightly better with its payment processing (although it still has the totally retarded clause of not being able to use a UK credit card from a non-UK IP..grr), but we really do need something better.

That said i'm still biased against steam, as i openly admit to holding a grudge against valve for killing off WON..I used to enjoy playing the old, 'classic' counter-strike (as I didn't like 1.6 at all) but when WON was swtiched off there were only about 10 servers left that were not full of hackers

I always heard bad things about Steam but when I tried it, I quite liked it. It can be a bit intrusive though.

I've never been a fan of Steam, annoyed the hell out of me when I first got HL2. Glad they've got more titles available now though, I can be even lasier

i like steam more and more despite the fact it still takes an age to startup on 3.6ghz of core 2 duo!!!

The pricing is still a bit off imho, especially on the $40-50 games which dont include vat remember. And are usually cheaper here especially given any new pc game can be had for £17.99 (usually with a quidco discount too) if you shop around...

still i just bought commandos 2 for $10.52

tho being on a puny 512k connection it still takes an age to actually DL any games
