TrackIR - Is it worth the money?

I'm swithering whether to get TrackIR to use while playing Armed Assault but don't know if it's any good.

Anyone love it/hate it? It's a lot of money if it's gimmicky crap.

mmm. middleing view of it. its obviously a bit half arsed if the monitor cant move to where your looking, which it cant. but then again i guess it will add SOMETHING to the experience.. guess it depends how much disposable you have really

edit: seems a little bit like the poorer cousin of VR glasses, which i guess would be the way forward rather than this but still have away to go

I fly a lot of sims and I fly a lot in Arma and I honestly cannot fly anything without it now, it's that good, it just opens up a whole new level of immersion and control that you just cannot get without it.

If you mainly play infantry though I would be a bit hesitant as the freelook function mapped near your pinky is more than adequate for looking around when you're on foot especially as your hand is already on the mouse anyways.

is looking at the screen rather than where your heads facing something you get used to or something that irritates still? cause i know its not really scientific but doing it now feels pretty wrong, and the closer to the screen i get the worse it is.

At first it feels a little strange moving your head but not your eyes but after a while and once you get your profile set up to suit your personal preference it becomes second nature and the movement in game is perfect.

You dont have to dramatically swing your head from side to side, it's quite subtle and the effect is really immersive, as I said I won't even fire a flight sim up now without it as I feel like I'm boxed in. Imagine driving your car with black bags taped on all of the windows except the windscreen, that's what it feels like for me now when I fly without TIR.

ah i see, i get a vague feeling of that now that my new (crap) joystick doesnt have a POV hat on it. i can see it working fine for relaxed games like flight sim i guess but not combat sims of the WW2 era for example?

I haven't tried it in ArmA yet (still to install) but most flight sim (& racing sim) players don't go back once they've got used to it.
It multiplies on screen your movement offscreen so that e.g. if you want to look 90 degrees right you don't actually have to physically look 90 degrees right ('cause then you couldn't see the screen ).

TIR is in its element with WWII sims, just pop over to the iL2 frums and you'll see that it's being used by just about every serious simmer who can afford it.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I might just start saving my pennies. Is edimensional the best/cheapest place to buy in the UK?

That's quite impressive. I didn't realise it had 6DOF and those demonstrations did look good, as did the ArmA Iron Sight demo it linked to as well. It's just unfortunate I don't play enough of those games to justify buying it. I would guess that as its popularity grew, more and more games will support it, making it a more worthwhile investment.

I forgot to mention, if you have a cheapo web cam that can do 30frames per second you can emulate trackir superbly with 2 a cam2pan&Newview setup. Only major difference is that Newview/cam2pan doesn't do 6dof, but seeing as not a lot of games support it it's not a huge deal. The head tracking is flawless when dialled in correctly.

Check out http://www.mousevision.com/game/index.htm for some info on cam2pan, It's definately worth a look if you have a webcam that'll do 30fps and want to see if TIR is worth saving up for. The one I used to use with it was £7.99 out of Argos and for 2dof games it was almost as good as TIR4.

BTW if anyone buys trackIR from edimensional, enter VBS as a code and get 5 per cent off.
