    STALKER tips & help thread

thought it might be helpful if we had a thread full of useful hints and tips only to get us through the zone

so here are a few from me
    -----

-do NOT save if you are crouched in a pipe otherwise when you reload you will be stuck!

    -do save often

    -shoot for the head

-at the beginning of dark valley you will see some artifacts 2 of them being very good, mamas beads (+5 bullet proof no side effects) and soul which gives you +600% health

-shotguns suck! only use as a last resort

-keep your weight under 50kilos or you will not get very far very quicky, remember to ditch ammo that you dont need as it all adds up

-if under 50 kilos with 1 moonshine (only found 1 of these during the yantar task just after you shut down the psi machine near ghost) or 2 flashes you will be able to run permanently without stopping

-if you find an rpg leave it, it has no use

for anyone interested you can get a suit/armour at the very start of the game.... you climb the ladder behind the guy you are meant to talk to, but go right on the ledge instead of in, crouch and then jump onto the building by the wall, then you can hop onto the next one (sprint) and then on the top left (if you imagine you just jumped on the bottom middle) and there is a crate, shoot it open and get armour

The gun that will abasolutely ensure your survival early on in the game until you get to the likes of the m300 and g36 is the fast firing ak47, its in Streloks stash on the shelf with the other ak47

and imo the SEVA suit is the best you can get, so keep it, everybody wants the exoskeleton but you cant sprint with it and you get it right at the end of the game anyway

Most important thing you need is a stash. You can get away with just dropping stuff in a secluded place, but if you're paranoid like me you can use the box on the right of sidranovich or the box in the Arena. Now, artefacts and animal parts, often needed for side missions, so horde them them in your stash or you'll spend hours looking for them.

Secondly clean up your inventory, you don't need to carry food, you can pick it up off corpses, same goes with spare weapons. Try to keep yourself to one equipped gun. and 500+rounds of ammo. Don't bother taking a second gun or pistol, unless your first is very low on ammo. You shouldn't need too many medkits either. 10 should be plenty. Don't carry any artefacts that you don't have equipped. My personal fave being the soul for 600% health and a load of stamina ones. Which will allow you to carry up to 60kg and sprint constantly. If you strip your inventory right down like this you can often carry up to 30kg of goods back from missions to sell. When i finished the game last I had 750,000 rubels.

Customised guns are worth their weight in gold. There's a rapid fire AK in strelok's old lair like mentioned before. The next one and my personal fave is a modified TR301(M4) with a silencer and scope, very accurate and silent. You can also add a grenade launcher. It's more accurate than a GP37, and doesn't suffer the reliability problems.

To find it, head directly out of freedoms base and follow the road, it'll take you to a merc camp. Tap the mercs, then in the bus-stop at the back will be the 301. if you join or are just take jobs from freedom one will be to destroy this base. Sometimes there is a modified IL86 there too, that can fire in full auto with very little kick back.

When shooting always use single shot mode and keep your distance, up close the AI will shred you. Remember to use the low crouch(CTRL+SHIFT). This doesn't apply til you have a half decent gun though. Until then it's gung ho with the double barrel. Use grenades wisely(read:never), as the blast wrecks guns and invariably backfires and you catch some. Which means your precious customised gun will get damaged and you cant repair it.

The VESA suit is the best in the game, combined with the soul artefact. You could use the exoskeleton+soul, but that just turns you into a walking tank, also you'll be far more vulnerable to radiation.

You can hide in bushes, and the AI will do the same, but you will make a LOT of noise. So move in using the low crouch, and stay low crouched. Try not to spin around or strafe, as soon as one AI spots you, he will open fire giving you away to the others.

When you're in a fire fight, pay attention to the armour your enemy is wearing. If it's light armour, just go for speed, and put 3 shots in the chest. The heavier the armour the more important shot placement is. Some of the heaviest sometimes wont be taken down by a headshot from normal ammo. So you need to hit the face or the back of the neck. Back of the neck is simple enough, as normally they wont know you're there yet.

The face shot, is simple when you know how. When the enemy is crouched and firing a headshot is almost impossible with the first shot, so you need to trigger one of the 'hit' animations. You'll know what i mean once you've been in a firefight. The AI will stumble back and then run to a different position. The easiest one is the left shoulder(your right), if you hit it, the AI will stand and his arms fall back, leaving his chest/face open for the easy follow up shot.

The other doesn't work as well, but still works. when the enemy is crouched, just shoot the knee that isn't on the ground, normally they'll end up with their back to you, but will move positions. So you can get them in the open, or go for one of his mates while he's moving and not shooting at you.
