    Anybody Here With a GP2X?

So I've been looking at this handheld for sometime. It looks really impressive and could well be the answer to some boring commute times. That and my recent found joy in playing retro games.

Anybody here on the forums got one, any bad points/negative aspects about it you could highlight? Also in terms of emulation what can't it do, (apart from the obvious stuff, new consoles, etc.) Very impressed with the snes emulation, but does it play games with the fx chip?

    Much appreciate any input/experiences.

I dont know why you would, since you can pick up a psp thatll do all the same stuff (admittedly the vids need recoding, but that doesnt take that long (c.30-40 mins/movie on my machine), its cheaper, and you can play commercial as well as old school games on it.

I had a go on a friends psp and was using the snes emulator. It felt very slow, and that wasn't even a demanding game, (mario all-stars). I'm not too impressed with the psp, and then there is all that extortionate pricing I will be forced to pay as I would want a specific firmware revision.

Have you played both sets of handhelds? Could you compare the performance of different emulators?

I have one. It's OK, but I quickly gave up on trying to play games on it. I use it as a portable DivX player now. Re-encoded Stargate etc on the train takes some of the pain away.

Performance wise, I couldn't get a fast enough frame rate for Metal Slug, and although some of the MAME stuff on it works, I'd probably spend the money on a PSP if I had the choice again.

How about a DSlite with a flash cart?

Would do the job..you can watch movies (re-encode takes about 30min for a full movie), listen to mp3s, play games, use it as a diary/web browser, and there are also loads of emulators that work rather well.

Cheaper than a PSP alsp, and has the bonus of being clam shell in design to keep your screens free of scratches

Ive had a quick play with a gp2x, and although it was nice, i wasnt stunned. Youd be fairly ublucky not to get a homebrew capable one i reckon, and they get cracked at a fair speed anyway.

Eh? The whole point about GP2X is that they're designed to be open source. They don't need cracking?

I would go DSLite as well, its a good product which works and has some great games.

GP2x seems a bit limited to me and something you have to learn to use. I like just getting stuff out and putting games in, i do enough configuration of PCs at work thanks!

I have a ds lite and I am pretty familiar with the ds homebrew scene. Don't get me wrong I love my ds lite, however after playing the latest snes emulator for it, I wondered what it would be like to have a handheld which ran it perfectly. (The DS lite snes emulator is still very buggy.).

From whatever sites I have read, and from all the youtube videos I have seen of the gp2x, the impression is given that emulation is pretty much 100% for given platforms. It seems now that somebody mentioned metal slug not running at a fast enough frame rate, this does concern me as I saw a video of this running on the gp2x and it looked fine from what I saw, and the fact that the possibility of playing neo geo games on a handheld with no buggy issues was an important buying factor.

I'm heavy into the retro scene and have considered the GP2X for almost a year now. Over that time the console has improved with firmware patches and almost weekly realeases of MAME and other emulators. Performance is improving all the time.

Your choice of retro games may dictate how well the GP2X performs. Due to my 39 years, I tend to be stuck in the Asteroids, Space Dual, Pacman, Galaxian and Defender era so these emmulate perfectly.

The use of hardware also dictates the kind of games I play for example:

Handhelds such as the DS and Gameboy, I use for puzzle games as arcade action isn't satisfying for me on such small controls.

Midrange like Wii and Gamecube are for my wife to share so Sports, Play and Mario Galaxy work great here.

On my PC I use for strategies and all the serious arcade shooters like Raiden, Viewpoint, Pulstar and Gravitar. This uses my homemade joystick console so I can mash the hell out of the buttons without breaking anything.

Can't say I have really helped in answering your question but I guess "What do you really want to play first?"

    Regards

Don't mean to hijack the thread but what's this about a DSLite and flash cart? My girlfriend has an original DS, can I get emulators for it?

The thought had never crossed my mind...?

I meant the psp, and was pointing out that you can run nearly all the same homebrew on it.

Ive been looking at getting one of the GP2X some time ago but couldn't afford one. It's ability to do so much and more importantly play classic games is a plus point. The latest hardware revision also has dual processors so should be more than capable of running games at a decent rate. I reckon you will need a good [SD] card that has good read speeds to make the most of it (though that's my guess)

I bought a DS (phat) last year when Currys were selling them for £40. It's a great machine and has some quality games, BUT the games are expensive. It can play movies/MP3s, etc but you need to buy additional software. In addition the hardware was not designed to incorporate homebrewing and I've read it's a hit and miss affair.

I think the PSP will be the same but I have little experience with the PSP.

If the GP2X is cheaper then I'd definitely buy one, but at £125 it's sadly out of my reach.

You can get the value pack from play-asia including shipping for about a £100. Probably the cheapest you'll find it.
