    dx10 games playable in xp?

hey guys i came across a interesting site that states that some people are working on a way to play dx10 games on xp!

here is a quote followed by a link:

DirectX10 Coming for everyone, with the help of the 'Alky Project'

We all know that DirectX10, for many of us, means an expensive upgrade and the move to a new operating system. We also know that DirectX10 is going to be necessary to play DX10 games such as Crysis and Halo 2 for the PC. What if I told you that a project sought to change that? That you could run DirectX10-exclusive games such as Halo 2 for PC on a DirectX9 platform with Windows 2000? Thanks to the Alky Project, we may not have to spend a penny to enjoy DirectX10 goodness. A quote from their official blog (I know, it's not an official web-page, but they do link to working models) tells us exactly how we can make DirectX10 work without spending at least $270 on a DirectX10 upgrade ($170 NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT, $100 Windows Vista Home Basic).

But do you think any developers will support this, or is it just going to be a case of 'could do dx10, but won't because the OS isn't Vista anyway'?

Hmm very interesting. I hope they make it work but people will still have to move to Vista in a while anyway.

I think it was rather cheeky of Microsoft to make Halo 2 a Vista only affair considering people with the Xbox 360 are getting Halo 3 very soon.

I knew something like this was going to happen, something always does, good luck to them, they're doing a VERY good thing for the gaming community

I'm not prepared to upgrade to Vista especially after the torrents of complaints and floods of incompatabilities etc. I've heard about concerning Windows Vista.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm well aware of it being early days for Vista, Windows XP was no way near as stable and solid as it is now about three years ago let alone on its launch

I'm not loving MS's control on the gaming industry now. Controlling the rate at which new technology in games progresses with DX10, locking it to vista only. Not looking good. I hope this Alky project works.

Yes very naughty to make Halo 2 Vista only when it is just a DX9 game. I am sure someone will find a workaround.

Isn't that more to do with the fact its a "Games for Windows" game that links in with the Live! service, and nothing to do with DX10?

No, I don't think so, they could have easily made it XP compatible, they could've just taken out the live stuff for XP owners. The reason you can't play it on XP it's been programmed to think it requires DX10, which it doesn't. It's just a way to get Vista shipping more.

There are plently of "Games for Windows" stuff out there, CoH, SupCom, none of those require Vista.

Excuse my ignorance on this, but I know very little about PC gaming nowadays, but do any of them use Live! for matchmaking multiplayer games, and trueskill rankings etc?

No, those don't, but I don't see why a separate program could be used to emulate the Live! feature Vista brings in.

I can see why MS want Halo 2 only on Vista, to try and increase Vista sales, but at the same time, they're reducing the sales of Halo 2. Although obviously Vista is more important to them, they've got more money riding on it.

I'm hoping shadowrun doesn't require vista, but if it does, I guess it's time to switch over
