    Gamespy problem

Right, I've never played nor attempted to play any games online before, but my mate just got Age of Empires II: Conquerors (yes I know it's ancient but I like it ) and we want to play. Did all the stuff downloading installing and setting up gamespy, but now we;re stuck.

We went into the room, and one of us created a game, then when both are in the game (but haven't launched it) we get the options at the top (which I assume are generic to every game on gamespy) "I'm Ready" and "Launch Game".

Whoever is hosting the game can click both, but whoever isn't, can click Im ready, but Launch Game is greyed out. What's causing this, any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Chris.

I would have thought that the host and the other player need to both select Im ready, then the host hits Launch the game and both players are automatically loaded into the game.

Nah doesn't work like that it seems. Both players have to click "I'm Ready" and then both click "Launch Game". Well that's how it worked with AOE II (not the Conquerors expansion) anyway. Just that the button isn't clickable for the hostee :/

You both have separate copies of the game? If you have the same copy on both machines the installation key will be the same (MS games usually have the key built in and you are given it before installing). Also make sure you both have the same version number of the game. If one person has patched up to latest build and the other hasn't it can cause problems.

Unfortunately I haven't any games that I can try out on Gamespy at the min. Having a think on it though.

You did set up a game and hosted it didn't you ?

Another thing you could try is uninstalling gamespy completely and both of you download it from the same place to make sure you both have the most recent versions.

Also double check firewall settings on both machines. The firewall may actually be blocking it without any prompts.

Well, we both tried hosting the game. If I do it, he can't join the game, if he hosts it, vice versa.

What happens is the hoster clicks "launch game" and it launches for us both. Both screens say "setting up multiplayer game" with the hoster then coming to a screen with the game options which he can set. The other person stays on the "setting up multiplayer game" until after maybe 5 mins it says Unable to join game" and quits.

We did download from the same location. About the firewall, well, if the game launches, I assume it isn't being blocked. There's stuff on the gamespy help about opening the relevant ports but I'm not quite sure how to do it with my (f-secure) firewall and he's not too computer savvy so I doubt he can do it. I only have 4 weeks of uni left and 3 projects to do, so maybe it's some divine intervention stopping me playing and telling me to do work instead

Having said that, my first time attempting to play a game online and this happens...doesn't really give me much faith in online gaming tbh :/
