Got STALKER today but ATI card keeps resetting?

Lo all,

Bought STALKER today .. great game, loving it...

But unfortunately my X1800XT seems to keep getting a VPU error and having to reset itself (meaning a 30second hang, black screen.. until it resumes) about every 10-20minutes of playing.

Can't seem to figure out what's causing it, got the latest Cats - the GPU fan is running at about 3/4 speed and reads at about 70-75c when playing.. had a quick google and not found anything.

Very annoying.

Any suggestions?

First off make sure you are patched up to the latest build. There are 2 patches so far 1.001 and 1.003, download them and instal one after the other.

I noticed the same problem with a few of my games jumping out to desktop and doing other weird things. Turned out to be the newest version of Zonealarm firewall doing it. Swat 4 done the exact same error as what you are reporting.

If you are running Zonealarm Firewall right click the mouse on the icon beside the clock and select Game Mode. Once the window opens select Automatic Deny (For offline single player game modes only, you need Automatic Allow for online play). Doing this solved my problem immediately, it was Zonealarm checking for updates and blocking intrusions (even though I have the popups disabled on it).

I run Outpost so it's not ZA, it's not something causing a jump back to desktop it's a definate VPU freeze & restart (can hear the fans kicking up to full as the card resets itself). I wanted to patch, but I've played it for too many hours to lose my save games now read through the fixes and most seem to be for MP and no mention of ATI related problems such as this.

Ty for the advice though.

I would try the patch, save games worked from patch 1.0001 to 1.0003 for me so you should be ok..

Give it a go (back up your save games first) so you can always roll back if you don't have any success...

I have heard of some ATI relates issues solved by this patch

1.0000 -> 1.0003 save games break.

Make sure to read the instructions, AND do note that if you install the patch your saved games will no longer be usefull and must be removed!

(I assume I've got 1.0000? Can't find the version number in any of the readmes)

If there is no version number in the bottom left hand side you will have 1.0000

You've probably tried this but, try it with the fan at 100%
just to see if it helps... This would tell you if it's the game
or a hardware (heat) issue...

My Sapphire X1950PRO 512MB only hits the high 50's/low
60's but I run the fan at 100%...

If you've just installed the game you mostlikely haven't
gotten very far yet... I'd upgrade to the 1.0003 patch...

Also check out Tweak Guides.com as the guide there for
STALKER can help clear up many issues and make the
game run alot smoother...

And, since you've just started the game, I'd suggest also
installing the Faiakes Mod 1.9 as this adds many nice features
to the game that make it much more enjoyable...

You'll have to google for them as I need to make 5 posts
before the forum will let me post links... If anyone wants
them, PM me and I'll try to give them to you that way if
it will let me ~or~ I'll edit this post once I hit 5 posts...

I don't like the look of Faiakes mod, makes it more FPSy (get all the guns straight off etc.) I enjoy the RPGy feel of STALKER it's like oblivion with guns heh.

Cheers for the advice.. nah I racked up quite a few hours of gameplay, really don't feel like starting over heh ..

How do you force the fan to run at full speed? Tweaking app.?

ATi Tool, you can choose to fun at 100% with that.

Hmm OT: I think I'm just being stupid.. but for the life of me I can't figure out how to throw grenades? Can't find it in the manual either :/ hmm. Not found any launchable ones for my automatic yet either so can't use that.
