    driving game?

Thinking about getting into a driving game soon and not sure at all what to go for

I think that id prefer something that is a little more faced paced and makes use of my new machine so yes games that are not currently out will definetly be taken into consideration. I would also like to get a wheel to maximise the realism so a wheel support if they dont all have anyway.

DiRT looks quite good and im getting round to downloading the demo soon lol

If you want realism avoid dirt, I've heard GTR2 is good. Nice graphics, and pretty realistic too.

Yup, all depends on whether you want realism or arcadey, like GT4. For something decent you can't go (very) wrong with rFactor (crap out of the 'box', but infintate mods), GTR2 as mentioned about (based on the same engine as rFactor) and GT Legends, which is much more fun than those 2 put together (and has rFactors graphics engine, but not the physics engine).

Personally, I can't really get into any of those ISI-based sims, and I'm still loving NASCAR Racing 2003 and Grand Prix Legends. They look dated now, but give I just can't drop them. Seriously great. Check out this thread I created yesterday for a taster of the NR2003 GTP mod in action.

The only other consideration for a simulation would be Live For Speed in my opinion.

TOCA Race Driver 3 is a good all round game - with all the "assist" off it can be quite a handful, but you are able to have fun in arcade mode too

If it's face paced fun online you are after - try the Trackmania series - awesome tracks, and great fun to play against others...

    Test Drive Unlimited!

Not so much track racing, but fantastic open roads/country roads type driving. Looks fantastic, goes great with a wheel.

I'm racing daily on a Live for Speed server, the game is constantly being developed and improved, recently to allow 32 car grids .
It's far from arcade and usually run with a view to being a sim with real life rules, it's also not overly demanding on graphics power. A wheel is a must, most sim racers prefer the Logitech Driving Force Pro or G25, if you're minted.
And there's a free demo download, which can be unlocked to the full game if you buy a licence. http://www.lfs.net/

GTR and GTR2, must admit GTR2 may be a little easier to pick up with those tutorial and stuff..

Get a mate and play thru a season together across a couple of weeks, its almost the closest you'll get to driving the real thing..

I've heard many that spits on GTR2's physics.. but these ppl generally loves games like NFS and Forza/PGR series.. so they're technically a totally different group..

GT Legends IMO is a little less fun than GTR though many might disagree. The cars are generally easier to control and doesnt require 2 sleepless nights to successfully finish a race without technically crashing out in 'sim' mode..

<---- dont mind the NFSMW gallardo here.. It was a one time only thing..

Sideways (GTL) is always much for fun mate, even if you don't need to be.

There were a lot of complaints over the GTR2 physics bugs when it first came out - ridiculously silly things like cars disappearing online and only their shadows remaining. I've no idea if they've been fixed yet.

There needs to be a distinctions between simulations, arcade and sort of simulation wannabes.

Sim: GTR, GTR2, GTL, rFactor, Live for Speed, NASCAR Racing 2003 (the Papyrus one, not the EA one), F1 Challenge, Grand Prix 4, Grand Prix Legends and perhaps RACE (World Touring Cars) which I've never played.

Arcade: Your Test Drive Unlimited, GT4, Need for Speed, EA NASCAR games.

    Arcadey-sims: Anything by Codemasters.

I got test drive unlimited recently. Mucho fun.

Lots more fun with a wheel though. Definatley get one if you don't have one. Even a cheap one will improve the experience.

Forza was excellent. Forza 2 might persuade me to get an Xbox 360. I think Forza is definatley better then GT4, IMO anyway. I had both and I hardly played GT4 compared to how much I played forza. Rallysport Challenge 2 was top notch as well.

Played a few on Ps2, but never on the PC. Yeh i will get a wheel because WASD is hardly a real experince.

Im thinking about waiting till a few Dirt reviews come out and then probably getting it + £20ish wheel.

But just decided to get Sup Comm after a while of pondering about it so that will fill a few weeks i suspect
