    Console failure

Having just read the 'Ps3 has died' thread and the fact it indicates its failure with a flashing red light, much like the Xbox 360's red ring (ahem) it got me wondering. (and as a slight off topic question, does the Wii have a warning system?)

Do older consoles have some sort of warning system as well? Because I've never seen one activated. If they haven't it's because manufacturers obviously didnt expect said consoles to fail. Where as it seems like today console failure is 'acceptable'.

Yup, old consoles just stopped usually - sometimes you might have had a funky corrupted screen, or buggered audio, but mostly they just quietly gave up the ghost.

I dont remember any of my old consoles having any warning screen although none of them ever died.

I remember my nes and snes getting pretty badly battered and still working.

Old computers where the best though. Had a mate with an old speccy, he poured a class of milk over it by accident but it kept on working.

My old c64 stopped working once so I unplugged it used it as a club on my brother and plugged it back in and it worked

It might not be entirely fair, especially as consoles are becoming more and more like PC's now. But to have a console fail seems unacceptable compared to a computer.

I've seen a fair few people have been having problems returning faulty consoles too. In my opinion their warranty should cover them for as long as they are considered the current gen console by the makers (at least). For them to say "well... you've had the thing 18 months now... that should be enough" is incredible.

i know its stupid to see these consoles fail. i wont be surprised of the next gen of consoles (ps4, xbox3 bla blah) fail even worse! the reason why we buy consoles is so that we dont get any headache with errors and overheating. they are becoming worse than pc's. at least with pc's if theirs an internal error like your ram dont work anymore, you could simply replace the ram.

if you take good care of your pc(firewall's anit virus etc) than you wont have any trouble whatsoever at all on a pc. i've had more trouble with my 360 than i have on my 4 year old pc... Very rarely my pc randomly shuts down, overheats or BSOD..

Why you try and stick a powerful PC in a case this size, you're bound to have major problems. MS didn't want to increase the size too much after they got slated for xbox heug, but I think all manufacturers made a mistake making the consoles so small. I hear the Wii can have problems overheating too if you don't position it right.

Next time around, they really need to rethink how they make the cases, I wouldn't mind really if I had a 360 the size of a large HTPC, after all, its basically is an HTPC.

That wouldn't surprise me at all tbh. I hate leaving it on standby, it gets too hot for my liking. I wish the fan would spin for a few minutes every half an hour or so just to remove the stale, hot air that builds up inside of it.

Modern consoles will always be prone to higher rates of failure than older consoles because their far more complex and generate much more heat in a much more confined space relative to their complexity.

As it happens I pulled my snes out from the shed yesterday, it had been in there for nearly 10 years in an open toped box. It was full of dust and other muck that naturally gathers in a shed and it still works to my delight. Even the save games are still present and working.

Untill the batteries run out and you can no longer keep a save game on the cart XD

The reason new consoles fail is because they're more advanced, they're a hell of a lot hotter, and they keep trying to stuff them into the smallest box they possibly can.
