That wouldn't surprise me at all
tbh. I hate leaving it on standby, it gets too hot for my liking. I wish the fan would spin for a few minutes every half an hour or so just to remove the stale, hot air that builds up inside of it.
Modern consoles will always be prone to higher rates of failure than older consoles because their far more complex and generate much more heat in a much more confined space relative to their complexity.
As it happens I pulled my snes out from the shed yesterday, it had been in there for nearly 10 years in an open toped box. It was full of dust and other muck that naturally gathers in a shed and it still works to my delight. Even the save games are still present and working.
