    Stalker

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems rubbish to me. I've ploughed on through it until the 'bar' and arena area, but it just seems a bit lame.

The graphics aren't fantastic (I fired up Prey they're not even comparable), the inventory system is annoying, and it just doesn't have the storyline to keep me interested.

Is it just me, or was this massivly overhyped?

I bought the game on the back of all the hype it was getting and reading a what a few people on these forums said about it. I got bored of it very quickly as well though. Stuck it on ebay a couple of weeks back to get some money back from it

yup blindin game, just coming up to the reactor. the game def gets better and better, the amount of weapons is amazing but most of all is the atmosphere!!! yes the inventory system is messed up but you can get use to it, but its the atmosphere that keeps me coming back.

I'm with gtech and YorkieBen. I got stalker on release (an impulse pre-order from Game) and I'm still playing it to date. I find your comments about the visuals surprising, especially considering the box you're playing the game on. The dynamic lighting effects are exceptional - in particular the lightening strikes.

To improve the visuals have you tried enabling motion blur?
Add '-mblur' switch to your shortcut, alter the effect by dropping the console and setting r2_mblur, I find 'r2_mblur 0.8' to be good.

Install the excellent float32 shader mod by jjwalker (http://www.thefloatingpoint.org/main/news.php). His mod replaces most (if not all) of the GSC shaders and it makes an incredible difference - shadows are much better looking, along with bump maps etc. Also improves performance!

Install the high res texture pack - and as is typical i'm at work and can't locate the damn link I play with these mods on a 8800GTS at 1680x1050 with everything maxed out and it looks wonderful!

Also trader mod (gives traders more wares to flog).

Check out both these at http://stalker.filefront.com/ and for more community mods etc.

EDIT - Faiakes mod is also very good (http://stalker.filefront.com/file/Faiakes_Mod;79644)

I finished it recently and thought it was fantastic. The atmosphere it creates is the best I've felt in a first person game in a long time. (especially at the end).

It feels like an MMORPG to me, I love how everything seems to be happening regardless of what you do. I dunno if it makes any sense to anyone else, but I love the way it makes you feel insignificant, like you've got your own story, but everyone else has theirs too.

The AI seemed really impressive too, sometimes I had no choice but to back away from a group of 6/7 enemies

Maybe that's what I did not like about it. I love mmorpg's, it's mainly all I play. The thing I like about mmorpg's is the social side of them, and obviously there is none of that with this game.

I gave up after i trekked back for ages to finish a mission only to get a pointless cash reward. Couldn't be bothered with spending hours trekking back to where i got upto, havent played it since. Whats the point in having cash rewards for everything when cash is the easiest thing to come by, why not give me a huge gun!

The game is definitely unfinished even with patch 1.003, however I kept with it as I love the atmosphere, the graphics and the weapons. Proper balistics and not the usual point the crosshairs and fire gets a kill each time.

It is a bit disproportionately difficult at the start but as you continue it gets better.

I also like the fact that you need to be a bit tactical and not just wade into 5 enemies.

    Things to improve,

    1. Side quests don't get you much, they could be improved and tied in with the rest of the story/plot.

    2. Inventory. There are some small bugs like pressing F to loot a body will bring up the inventory window but does not allow you to do stuff with the inventory.

    3. Some sort of vehicle at the main bases so you don't have to trek miles back to hand in a quest. Tip - use the sparkler and flash artifacts (+36 and +76 endurance) travel light.

    4. Respawning quests. It seems you are always asked to defend the Garbage or something each time you enter the zone. Annoying.

I'm going to add some of the mods today.

it's a shame, because I really like the ideas behind it - the scale, the atmosphere, the plot - but if the graphics ain't up to scratch and it's got a bunch of glitches then I can't be bothered with it

It does have its rough edges but I like to think that it adds a little to the atmosphere. There is nothing more exhilarating then engaging a squad of military only for your AK-47 to jam when you move from cover. I love the game, I'm still playing it now. Graphics and visuals are certainly up to scratch! Though there are issues with ATI hardware and hardware shadows... They can bring it down a little, like an anchor...man...

Quite a good game I'll agree, but as prev said it has a 'unfinished' feel to it which is a bit dissapointing, and the treking back and forth for rewards is a bit tiresome.
