Quake 4 and Stalker problems

Got both games installed and when I run both they look like there going to start but then go to the desktop, tried both with and without patchs but with no sucsess.
Seems odd that both do it?
Also tried updating my graphics drivers and Direct X with no joy.

What about reinstalling DirectX9. The very latest version should be on the STALKER disc.
Normally works for me.
If that doesn't help, it could be firewall problems. Check the Task Bar as well, if they're just minimising to Task Bar and not quitting outright, then it's more than likely something running in the background.

Tried DX reinstall as per my first post , No firewall software installed here as I have a router

That sort of behaviour would often be caused by outdated graphics drivers, but as you say they're up to date, it rules that out. What graphics card have you got?
One other thing you could try is looking in "Event Viewer" in "Admin Tools", see if that gives you a clue what's happening.

Try shutting down unnecassary background processes as well.

X1950XTX which has run both games fine before, Doom 3 also works fine.

All fixed, It was my sound card of all things, driver update sorted it

Well done Glad you're all sorted. I must admit I always check event viewer when a persistent problem occurs. But that one you posted was a bit too cryptic

Need to brush up on my Windies XP methinks.
