Another Best Games Ever Poll - Edge and BBC.

Yes, another best game ever poll, but this one I found on the BBC News site (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6261546.stm) reporting of an Edge magazine poll, asking readers and industry insiders to vote on teh best game ev0r.

    The list:

    1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. (Nintendo - N64)
    2. Resident Evil 4. (Capcom - GameCube, PS2, Wii)
    3. Super Mario 64. (Nintendo - N64)
    4. Half Life 2. (Valve - PC)
    5. Super Mario World. (Nintendo - SNES)
    6. Zelda: A Link to the Past. (Nintendo - SNES)
    7. Halo: Combat Evolved. (Bungie - Xbox)
    8. Final Fantasy XII. (Square - PS2)
    9. Tetris. (Nintendo\Some Russian Bloke - GameBoy)
    10. Super Metroid. (Nintendo - SNES)

Everyone has their own personal choices, but overall I think it’s not a bad list. I've always said Nintendo make the best games, and always have, and this seems to be the general consensus, as they have top spot, and most of the other spots. Pretty obvious that Zelda X or Super Mario X was going to win, just select one at random. Sony, Sega and Microsoft between them have never quite matched the magic that Nintendos flagship titles have.

I've not played Resident Evil 4 yet - saving it for when I get the Wii Edit, so I can't comment, but switch FF12 for FF7, and remove Halo, which has never been even a great game, let alone one of the best games ever (Goldeneye instead?) and its not the worst top 10 I've ever seen.

Tetris - not for me. Good game, but it’s like a Rubik’s cube, you go back to it now, and it reminds you of the dodgy 80s, and is no fun.

Overall roughly what I expected though.

    Thoughts?

yeah its not exactly a bad list, though maybe street figher could of appeared in there somewhere.
possibly sonic 2, still love that game, half life 1 instead of 2.

agree with your comments about halo and final fantasy. ff7 is easily my fave game.

Yep, Street Fighter II Turbo should be in there, but then so should Command and Conquer, Super Mario Kart, etc. Sonic I or II has a shout as well. No-one is going to agree completely. Its just a decent effort, considering when HEXUS tried this, about 9000 monkeys voted for Counter Strike and other nonsense, resulting in the least reliable best games ever list in the world.

I'm not sure its a good list at all.

So many classics not even on the list.... Top 10 ever needs to have the ground breakers, not the sequels...

    Elite,
    Gran Turismo?,
    System shock?,
    Command and Conquer
Quake (blows away HL2 imo for the classic best ever list)
    Street Fighter 2 etc?

    Haha. Yeah.

Nothing ground breaking about Super Mario 64.

Nowt groundbreaking about Ocarina of Time.

You aint gonna see System Shock or Elite mate - the best games ever are going to be games that everyone has heard of, everyone likes, everyone has played, universal classics. So Mario, Zelda and the like get the spots.

Although really, its just a poll of the best games - sequal or not makes no difference, ground breaker or not makes no difference - how good were they? All that matters. Even having said that, Supre Mario 64 (and ocarina) were two of the most ground breaking video games of all time. You'd be hard pressed to find a more groundbreaking game.

Taking Mario, the 100 million+ selling flagship Nintendo mascot, and taking him to 3D for the first time, producing an almost perfect game in the process? Ground breaking hardly does it justice.

good list would agree with most of them apart hl2, mario 64 was going to say re4 but i never played it so i cant.

I dont agree with general comments about halo, great game which gave life to genre on consoles which was generally overlooked apart from the likes of goldeneye and perfectdark that is

dont totally disagree, a link to the past was so *right* it deserves to be there. but what the christ is halo there for? as amazingly fun as it was you knew that if it was a pc title it would have been swallowed up into obscurity. champ? GT? sensi software games? elite? counterstrike? a bullfrog game or two? syndicate was SPOT ON. list goes on

Assume Halo is there because when the Xbox launched the only thing worth playing was Halo - so if you had an Xbox, you had Halo. And this seems to have started the myth that its a good game.

Not enough people have heard of the rest of your choices to trouble the top 10.

ok then, since they like console games so much from the look of it.. either f-zero or mario cart should be on that list. im at pains to pick one over the other but i would edge it to mario cart as the battle mode has burned the game into my memory as something that can be called the "best ever". so, so so so so so so far ahead of its time, and i would happily play it right now because i know however much graphics and "physics" have improved that game was spot on

Mario Kart is most deffo a top 10 game ever, yes. Already mentioned it.

F-Zero was great, but Mario Kart crushes it, not edges it out. It was just so much more fun.

Half Life 2 instead of the original? That's just wrong, and Deus Ex was better than both. I'm surprised there was nothing from old formats like Speccy/C64 (Head Over Heels?) or Amiga/ST (Speedball 2?) but then maybe they were never as popular as their console brethren - actually there's nothing older than the SNES or Gameboy! How old is your average EDGE reader? Bloody kids don't know anything. Am I an old duffer for writing those last 2 sentences?

The list does suck, the only games there that should be in the top 10 are Mario Land and possibly HL2.

OOT definitely shouldn't have the top spots, it's an awful game.

Yeah - have to agree, how Halo was on that list is a crime against such classics like System Shock 2 - Deus ex etc, but spose the list is more "console" orientated.

Spectrum wise so many classics. Fairlight was one that really stood out, as well as Alien 8 (they were the days)
