    Cannon Fodder on the PC

    Hi everyone,

I purchased Cannon Fodder on the PC quite a while ago now, and have never been able to play it due to it freezing on the Virgin screen at the very begining when launching the game, appearing in sort of a trasparent fashion.

I've tried running it in all kinds of compatibility modes, but to no avail.

Has anyone else got a copy of this? Or have any ides what is happening when I attempt to boot the game?

    Any help would be appriciated.

    Thanks
    Jon

I remember Cannon Fodder 2 requiring a heck of a lot of conventional memory... but I guess that's not much help.

Any chance you can whack DOS 6.2 on a 100MB partition or something?

Try a virtual machine. I use Virtual PC 2007 to run up a old version of windows - like 98 - then just install the game and hey presto
Beats messing around with DOSbox etc anyway..

http://www.games4win.com/games/cannon-fodder/ <--- full game from here (its freeware/abandonware now)

edit: i played it fairly recently actually, seemed to work fine on XP without any additional software, just a compatibility mode/some of the visual options underneath but i cant remember which ones

Thanks to this thread, I am now replaying it on the Amiga Emulator WinUAE. I lost the third disk back when I had it on my Amiga, so couldn't get past level 12 . Being able to save the game state halfway through the mission is also very helpful . Managed to get to level 20 so far with no loses! Found out the soldier's kill count maxes out at 999 as well...

The most similar game that I have come across in recent years was Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. Similar control, but much more realistic. No helicopters or jumping Skidoos though . But can still be a lot of fun driving a tank around demolishing buildings .

    ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!

Go to your brother, kill him with your gun...

Seriously, I haven't fired up that game since I closed the box on my Amiga about 12 years ago! And as soon as you said that, it came flooding back! Know what I'm going to have to download this evening

And obviously to continue the trend...was it more fun than Mega-lo-Mania?!

I always thought the words were: -

War, never been so much fun!
War, never been so much fun!
War, never been so much fun!
War, never been so much fun!

    Don't you worry,
    Kill him with your gun.
Then he'll be lying in his uniform,
    Dying in the sun.
