    Gaming Innovation...who did what first?

So seeing the news thread for EA 'revolutionary' shooter it got me to thinking...who did what first in terms of gameplay innovation. We all pretty much know that first 3D was Castle Wolfenstein but what about the rest?

I am thinking of these things in particular...

    1) Squad based tactics?
    2) Bullet time stuff/Slowing of time?
    3) Play as bad guys?
    4) No health bar for player?
    5) Movie tie-in?
    6) Online racing?
    7) Multiplayer?

    ...but its all up discussion!

I got a feeling the regen/health bar thing was in Call of Duty but surely that can't be the first.

And by the way I am not having a go at EA, they make games...buy them or don't. End of.

    1) dunno
    2) max payne
    3) custer's revenge (raping native american women makes you a bad guy, right?)
    4) this really bad jurassic park game where the only way to view health was to look down at a tatoo on your chest. no really
    5) superman for atari 2600
    6) POD
    7) pong!

i reckon that's a decent stab at accuracy. i'm probably wrong on 4 though

Wow, that's a bit of a thread killing response! Gonna struggle to improve on most of those answers...

I definitely agree with 2) and 7), can't argue with any of the others either. Although first game to not have a health bar? Pong!

    3) was a mental idea for a game. But maybe we should look for which game let you play as bad guys or the good guys, i.e. had both sides on offer.

    Interesting...

Yeah I have heard ET was a first, and that it was a monumental stinker!

    7) Multiplayer?

Just thought it could be the Pole Position or one of its clones.

i don't know if classes as a proper movie tie-in, but Death Race (1976) was "inspired by" the film Death Race 2000.
