Welll that's it, really - anyone know if this'll be SP only, or hacking, people-on-fire (!) multiplayer fun, or, er, not?

MP will probably come later (a-la Half Life 2).. but I think the singleplayer was the main focus - rather get that polished and then work on MP later on.
no mp? wtf ur kidding? Would never buy a single player game, completed...now what... even the best games take under a week to complete..

If I remember correctly one of the developer said in the intereview that this game is designed for single player only in mind so there maybe be online content updates in the future(like additional maps and stuffs I guess) but no online multiplayer mode planned so far, or something like that.
Its like making counterstrike source and making it only single player. From what ive seen it looks like its made for multiplayer!!! imagine the fun

You obviosuly have more game-playing time than me! Takes me weeks to complete games...
Multiplayer is great for longevity, but the whole point at this stage is the great atmosphere, level design and story.
Sure MP will come along in some form or other later on.
Remember, Half Life 2 had no multiplayer when it first came out and it got great reviews and thousands still bought and loved it.
I'm not comletely put off the game, god no! I played the xbox 360 demo and luvvit it (rubbish demo textures tho) but yeah, MP would rock! But I'll be buying this...

Would have been nice to have multiplayer, I reckon we'll see that in Bioshock 2

Based on the past games (the system shock games), I just don't think it would translate to a multiplayer. Its just not that kind of game.
Best waiting for Crysis / Unreal Tournament 2007 etc... for multiplayer action. This is a different kind of game I think. I may get proven wrong but, I doubt it.
Yeah it'd be like making Morrowind, Oblivion, Half-life 2 etc. single player only at first. Oh wait..
dont agree directhex. I jsut think at this day and age, making single fps is pointless, everyone wants to play mp. Once completed, i really dont see much point going bk, unless its a year on and your net drops. Been playing COD2 for the last 4 days whilst changing my net. Great single player, but once completed, all i wanted to do was kill people online...

different design goals, for different target audiences.
a story-driven single-player game offers the engagement of a good book
a deathmatch offers the engagement of graphically-advanced freecell
not to say that's necessarily always bad (I enjoy UT) but different strokes for different folks - and sometimes, a game can't be both things at once whilst still being the best it could be separately
Yes I agree. Its just a different type of game. Atleast..... I'm assuming it is. I don't have it yet, but like I said above I'm basing that on System Shock and System Shock 2. They where amazing games. But yes, really not suited to multiplayer. It just wouldn't translate well to multiplayer for a lot of reasons really. It might not even be different target audiences because I love single player games as much as online shooters. But they are very different kinds of games. Online shooters are about playing as team and fragging real people etc.. These shock games are just not like that at all. They are story based, and full of atmosphere. What makes them different to all the other FPS's, is the fact that you are creeping around these creepy places by yourself... its spooky, atmospheric, and scary. Its about isolation because you are by yourself and there are never (or rarely) any other humans (alive). Its just you and psychotic creatures/robots etc.. so it makes the whole thing very moody. And that would be completely lost if there where 32 people bunny hopping all over the place shouting, "LOL PWNDDD!!!!!".
And then there is the RPG aspect. You build up your character's stats etc. You customise the character. And part of that is to do things like hacking computers to unlock areas or supply medkits etc.. That is a huge part of the game and that entire aspect would have to be hacked up and molested pretty strongly to fit into a 10 minute deathmatch or whatever. And you couldn't just completely remove that aspect without taking a chunk of the game's identity away. Without that, and without the atmosphere, you mayaswell just play one of the other 99 FPS's on the market. The developers knew that, and thats why they didn't add a multiplayer.
