Bioshock demo .exe issues ? Anyone else?

    Hey all,
I've read one or two other reports of this - the bioshock demo gets blocked due to anti-viral software.
What's happened to me is simple: my AVG install thinks the demo's setup.exe contains some sort of generic trojan. As a result it has blocked/damaged/removed any copies of the exe I had on my machine. I have not been able to locate the .exe on its own anywhere on the internet! I wondered if someone would be kind enough to email their setup.exe file from their download to me to my hotmail email address (i.e. just the setup.exe file to install the demo not the whole thing)!:

    chris colhoun (a t ) hotmail .com

    many thanks in advance,

    Chris

I've seen reported in a few places that the demo version hosted on gamershell included a trojan

I'm sorry I should've checked it properly, as soon as I updated virus definition file today, my AVG picked up this setup.exe too. So don't use it. I'm scanning my pc as I am writing this Deleted the file at sendspace, bah.

sure its not just a false-positive?

I grabbed my copy of the demo off rapidshare, no idea where it came from before that but i'll stick up the setup.exe if anyone wants it...

I just finished full pc scan(avg, a-squared amd spybot) and it came up with no threats. So maybe false positive, yes.

Re: Bioshock demo .exe issues ? Anyone else?

My copy of the demo came from steam but when I run it I just get a black screen. Alt Tab does nothing. Ctrl Alt Del reveals a message back in Windows saying this program has stopped working properly. Im running Vista 64, 8800gts with the new drivers. Just running Windows security stuff and no message saying its blocked it. All other games work fine with the new drivers. Im not too fussed about the demo but Ive preordered the full game and that had better work. Any thoughts?

Re: Bioshock demo .exe issues ? Anyone else?

symantec picked up nothing from my version of the demo, so it could be AVG being overzealous, try turning it off and installing the demo

You're using the newest beta drivers from http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70betadriver.html here released on monday?

Have you tried reinstalling the latest version of DirectX (and directx9 redist just incase)

Hmm, works fine for me in Vista with the new drivers and an 8800GTS. Have you got all the updates & compatibility fixes for Vista?

    Hey there matey,
thanks again. It was AVG that caused my issues too - its a false positive for sure - many reports of the same thing around the net on various forums. Apparently the exe has a self updater in it and as a result it gets identified as a trojan - notice AVG lists as generic - the file checks with 2K to see if there is an updated version available.

Oddly, even with the new exe it wouldn't run - I had to fire in to safe mode and then install the demo. All looked good except it wouldn't run still! I tried downloading it again via steam this time and it started first time - which seemed to be due to the fact that steam force installed the C++ runtime environment with SP1 of this package. It now runs from either the steam install or the normal demo on its own. The only problem now is that the game locks up when I get to the menu - not right away but after about 5 seconds. I have the latest driver for my 1950 and the patch for bioshock released on Monday.

Who knows ... I'll pursue it but I think the game will be out to buy by the time I get it sorted. Doubting whether to buy the PC version now though after the trouble I've had. My second Xbox 360 died this week though so no winning there either!

Best of luck to anyone else trying to run the demo.

    regards,
    Chris

    Its the newest beta drivers.

I kind of assumed Vista would update itself, I know XP did almost every day...isnt DirectX part of those updates as well? Is there a way to check what Ive got and what I need to update?

Directx isn't part of the windows automatic update program. Just search the microsoft website for the latest redist and install that for dx9.

As as Im aware there are no updates for dx10 as yet.
