Bioshock PC - you are only installing this twice

Seems 2K are having some issues with their punters - they used sercurerom protection for Bioshock (like that's going to stop the pirates right?!) and it will only allow two installs of the game. So, we the paying public shell out, what £30 notes or so for a game, get treated like criminals with wasteful crapware like securerom whilst downloaders enjoy the game for free and with zero hassle.

Prolly best to bring that discussion to this thread, the other one is going waaaaaaaay OT.

To sum my thoughts up - I was seriously considering buying this through Steam. My understanding is that in order to play the game this way you need to be logged into Steam, and that only one PC can be signed into the Steam account at any given time.

Seemingly not in this case. I'm not talking about installing it on all my machines and lending it to my mates to do the same, I just want to play the game I buy when and where I feel like. So long as I'm not using it on more than one machine at a time where is the problem?

Re: Bioshock PC - you are only installing this twice

The problem depends on what license you are buying with the game - if you buy a license that allows you to play it on multiple machines then that's fine, but often games these days only allow you to install it on one machine at a time, like windows. I guess Bioshock is exactly the same, so if you want it on different machines simultaniously, you need to buy more copies.

You can still lend it to mates etc, you just need to uninstall it from your machine when you do so.

Re: Bioshock PC - you are only installing this twice

But that's contrary to the way Steam is advertised, as per my quote. IANAL, but I suspect that advertising one thing and delivering quite the opposite is frowned upon from a legal point of view.

I'm not against the developers who have worked their behinds off making money from the game in any way, shape or form but I really think 2k have dropped the ball here.

Another example - I play Football Manager from time to time. I'll be the first to admit that I have purchased one copy of the game and yet have games in various states across no less than 3 machines (possibly more). Given the fact that I can only make use of one installation at any given time due to the fact that the CD must be in the drive to play does this make me a pirate? If so hand me my eyepatch and parrot, because I don't believe that I'm doing anything wrong.

The other thing is the comparison with Windows. Windows is sold as licensed software - when you buy it you know full well that it can only be installed on one machine, nowhere on the packaging for Bioshock can I see anything regards the license being this restrictive. Hell, you can't even read the license without opening the packaging, at which point I wish you good luck if trying to get a refund on the basis of disagreeing with the license.

Re: Bioshock PC - you are only installing this twice

Why don't game companies understand you will NEVER beat piracy with measures like this. Even the very best protections out there are broken within hours of going on sale, 9 times out of 10 long before that.

I like to buy my games, I enjoy having a box, a CD and flicking through the manual while it installs, I'm not a pirate, but if I come across an issue like, and it's easier to download a crack than to jump through hoops every time I upgrade my PC, guess what I'm going to do?

Congratulations you turned an honest customer toward piracy and I bet I'm not the only one. When you start doing that you're just showing paying customers how easy it is to get games for free.

I can afford to drop £40 on a new game, but for many players this is money they would rather spend elsewhere given an alternative, which thanks to draconian security measures you're introducing them to.

Game companies need to realise customer service doesn't end at the bloke in Gamestation giving me a smile when I hand over my cash.

Well you are able to use Steam in that way, just not certain games that are also available over Steam.

Another example - I play Football Manager from time to time. I'll be the first to admit that I have purchased one copy of the game and yet have games in various states across no less than 3 machines (possibly more). Depends what license you agreed to - check the EULA. If the game says it's one copy per user then you're fine. If it says you're only licensed to install on one machine at a time then you're breaking the EULA that you agreed to.

You can always get a refund if you don't agree to the EULA. The EULA should be clear before you play the game - previously this was only at the back of the manual but I think more and more games are making you agree to it as part of the install process.

Re: Bioshock PC - you are only installing this twice

let me repoint you to that quote - it specifically states that you can play your games on any PC. This is entirely contrary to what is being reported. Nothing in the marketing states *terms and conditions apply, buyer beware, except Bioshock etc etc etc.

Again, it's unlikely to affect me as I only have one machine that will run the game well so it's a one install game for me but I'm holding off buying the game based on this situation. If they don't fix this they lose a sale, simple as.

As pointed out elsewhere it's things like this that push people towards piracy - legitimate users are punished while the pirates have none of the issues.

As for getting a refund based on disagreeing with the EULA I wish you luck. Pretty much all retail outlets will not accept software returns once the seal is broken.

I hate product activation crap. Looking at Oblivion it was probably the best selling game of 2005/2006 and it had no form of anti piracy device.

Re: Bioshock PC - you are only installing this twice

Those that purchase the game have to tolerate the stringent antipiracy rules that the game imposes. That's two activations per purchase. Your single player game requires that you have internet access to install/uninstall. You have to ensure you've uninstalled the game before reinstalling. That's fine so long as you can uninstall the game; there are plenty of reasons why you'd not be able to uninstall such as having to reinstall the operating system after a complete system failure...

Those that pirate the game are free to do whatever they want as, no doubt, a crack will be designed circumvent those issues.

    That's fair right?

Re: Bioshock PC - you are only installing this twice

The truth behind BioShock copy protection - It isn't as bad as the rumors would have you believe but still the pirates will have no issues and the legal owners of the product get s*** on again. It is the same for everything these days; I don't know why they even bother anymore can't they see thats all they do is alienate the very people that actually support the company in making a purchase.

@Dorza - I think that 'official' statement has been seen before and I also believe that this has been shown to be false, people have tested the statement and found it not true, they were still locked out. Though if you ask me you have to be a little bit of a moron to purposely lock yourself out of your shiny new game but there you go.

I actually cut off one of my feet once when I entered a dispute with Totes Toasties over their claims that my feet would retain a temperature of 311 kelvin.
