    Top 13 Results

Due to a lack of votes, there are quite a few "joint" titles. And it's a top 12 not a top 25, due to too much statistical noise below that point.

48 votes total, 131 different games voted for

    Well, with no further ado:

    10. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
    10. Metal Gear Solid (PC, Playstation)
    10. Gran Turismo 3 (Playstation)
    10. Call of Duty (PC)
    7. IL2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles (PC)
    7. Doom (PC, SNES, Playstation, hell just about EVERYTHING)
    7. Counterstrike (PC, Xbox)
    5. Unreal Tournament (PC, Playstation 2, Dreamcast)
    5. Final Fantasy VII (PC, Playstation)

    2. Super Mario Kart (SNES)
    2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PC, Playstation 2, Xbox)
    2. Command & Conquer (PC, Playstation, N64, Mac, Saturn)

    1. Half Life (PC, Dreamcast, Playstation 2)

If you voted for any of these, a few short words about why would be appreciated.

Some interesting votes included Dizzy, Snake II and 5 different Need for Speed games. If you want to write a short work on any game you voted for which DIDN'T make it, but you felt it deserved to, say why here!

Well, not great is it? GTA: Vice City is a great game, but one of the few very best games of all time? Nah mate.

Where's the votes for Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World or Sonic?

A few too many modern-ish PC games on there as well. Were people not playing games on consoles in the late 80s and 90s? If so, a lot of people seem to have forgotten just how good gaming was back then.

Nice to see Mario Kart, Command and Conquer, Final Fantasy VII and Ocarina of Time on there, but there are some well dodgy choices making up the other 6.

Nice to see someone voting for Dizzy as well. A good few classic Dizzy games were released for the ZX Speccy.

Anyway, that's my thoughts. A few good games on that list, but also a lot of dodgy choices. Counter Stike one of the best games ever created? Erm... right.

I would write a piece on why Street Fighter II Turbo should be on there, but then, everyone who's played it already knows.

There was 1 vote for Mario World, 1 for Mario 3, curiously 3 for Sonic 3 & Knuckles

And one vote for Street Fighter 2

Oh dear. I remember when IGN did one of these things, and Mario and Nintendo were all over the top 10, and rightly so.

We do one, and games like Counter Strike and GTA: Vice City get tons of votes, with true classics getting one or two.

Still, I suppose that it to be expected; IGN is a proper gamers website, and this is a sub-forum of a PC discussion board, so no big supprise that the results are... interesting.

Here's a link to IGN's Top 100 Games of All Time, by the way, for anyone interested: http://top100.ign.com/1-10.html

Anyone not sure why Street Fight II is a classic can read this, and find out.

Next, perhaps, we can do specific types of games, such as 'Best FPS', or 'Best Platform Game'.

Indeed. Vice City gets enough votes to make the top few games, and Mario Bros 3 gets 1 vote.

Either we have a very young group of gamers voting, none of you have ever owned a decent console, or you're only voting for games you've played in the last 2 years.

Maybe all those who were playing games during the 8 and 16bit console era's forgot to vote.

I voted Tomb Raider. That should have made it on their somewhere because it completely changed the idea of an action game...and the latest one is still fantastic despite what reviews say about it!

But anyway, good to see that all of the top 4 i have enjoyed playing at some point

Two of my votes got into the top 13 - Metal Gear Solid and Vice City.

To quickly defend Vice City, it is simply the most immersive gaming environment ever created. The humour in it is very well executed and the radio stations add a new dimension to games that has never really been acomplished before. The city feels alive and you feel apart of it. It's certainly not a perfect game - the story line isn't as good as the first one and the ending is a little bit of an anti-climax but it's still the most fun game on any of the current generation of consoles, IMO. It's a modern video game and I can only see more video games using a similar format (open ended gameplay, real music, good voice acting, etc). As for it having no reply value, I disagree. There's lots of hidden extras and challenges to complete. Hidden packages to find, races to take part in, rampages to do. It's a big game.

The ones that didn't make the list:

Pro Evolution Soccer: OK, we weren't allowed to nominated game series, which in this case is a bit unfair as they're very similar. I've been a big fan of football games for years. From Kick Off and Microprose Soccer on the Atari ST/Amiga, to Sensible Soccer and the original FIFA on the Mega Drive, to the first 'modern' football games like Actua Soccer on the PC/PSX, to the current crop of soccer games. Quite frankly, nothing comes anywhere near even close to Pro Evolution. Despite it's faults (lack of licenses, poor commentry, bad UI), the gameplay keeps you coming back time
after time. It's deep, it's a game of skill and tactics. It's the game FIFA wishes it was.

Quake World: My favourite online multiplayer game ever by a long way. Deathmatch is well balanced, fast and very much about skill but it was the Team Fortress mod that kept me coming back for more. Sure, it was a FPS, but TF was a very tactical game in a way that games like CS will never be. The level design was great, the physics led to a game based almost entirely on skill (if you had the skill, you could do silly things with grenades) and the variety in tactics was amazing. This was only helped by QuakeWorld's great net code and low overheads meaning that 12-a-side leagues was a regular occurance.

Civilization 2: Best strategy game ever, IMO. Really surprised it didn't make the top 10. No fancy graphics, just good gameplay. There was a very nice balance about everything and I loved seeing my tiny little tribe turning into a post-nuclear armageddon utopia.

Only console I ever had was a megadrive, I didn't actually think to vote for any of the games I played on that. I mean, that was 10 years ago now.

Used to really enjoy Sonic and Knuckles and there was one Mickey Mouse Game, can't remember the title, something to do with a castle I think. Actually managed to complete that, there weren't many I finished, what with no save function.

Very immersive, those games, and very strange enviroments. Thoroughly enjoyed them.

If you don't think that Super Mario Kart on the SNES deserved it then either:

    A) You have never played Super Mario Kart on the SNES,

    or

    B) You have never played Super Mario Kart on the SNES.

    Which is it?
