Free Download of Command & Conquer Gold Begins C&C 12th Anniversary Celebration

EA is offering Westwood Studios' seminal RTS Command & Conquer Gold as a free download starting today on the Command & Conquer website. The full game download, commemorating the August 31 release of the game 12 years ago, comprises two ISO image files and is also hosted on FileShack for your downloading pleasure.

We've got both ISOs up for download at FileShack. Get the the United Nations' Global Defense Initiative (GDI) disc here and the Brotherhood of Nod disc here. This version of Command & Conquer Gold is Windows XP compatible and identical to the version included in the compilation Command & Conquer: The First Decade. EA has also provided installation instructions for the game.

The announcement on EA's Command & Conquer Web site promises further goodies every week during the month of September.

Oh, I'm liking these free download things....shame I don't actually have time to play any of them (certainly not going to risk getting hooked on crack-like C&C)....but even so, bloody marvelous....

Anyone managed to get this to work?

I've downloaded the ISOs and the XP fix, burnt them to disc, did all the compatibility stuff (Windows 95 mode etc), and can't get them to even start to install.

Preparing to Install
1. Insert either C&C disc into your CD drive
2. Open My Computer and explore the CD
3. Right click either the install.exe or setup.exe
4. select PROPERTIES
5. Select the COMPATIBILITY tab
6. Check the check box for “Run this program in compatibility mode for”
7. Select WINDOWS 95 from the drop down menu
8. Click APPLY then OK
9. Double click the .exe file you just modified to launch it

10 - Click the icon after doing all that, and it still doesn't work.

Ideas?

DosBox wont install either, I'm getting error messages.

But back to C&C - I do everything then start the installer and get '"Setup Initialization Error" come up straight away.

Anyone understand Windows error messages?

Have you tried using daemon tools? Run daemon tools in win 95 mode then mount the iso is all I can think of.

No, I'm using Windows XP Home w/ SP2.

Iranu - Just tried, exactly the same error messages. Arrgh! Why wont this POS work?

did you untick the directx bit ?

you'll need to eh xp patch to run the game after you'd installed it.

The DirectX bit is during install isnt it?

As I said, I can't even get the installer to start. 'Setup Initilization Error' as soon as I click the installer - not the game icon once its installed.

Finally got it working. Had to flash the BIOS and mess about with some other stuff.

Blast from teh past this! The music brings everything back.

I had to run it in windows 98 compatibility on Vista, but the resolution on my TFT is painful...
