    How is Vista for gaming?

Anyone had any significant problems or compatibility (games that is) with it?

Just wondering, as I've not really kept up to date on Vista's development.

Ace, just I've heard really conflicting opinions on Vista, kinda like marmite, people either love it or hate it. The only major issues I've heard of are driver ones, which will be sorted in time, and 2gb RAM not being enough for some games, but I plan to get another gig next month.

Re: How is Vista for gaming?

From what i understand the ram usage issue is more with 64, it's just not the best at utilising it so extra helps.
I used 2 gig at first with no probs and then upgraded to 4.
But 2 gig should be enough with 32 bit i would think.

There have been a few driver issues but thats due to nvidia being a little slow to react to new games and demos.
They are normally quite quike at releasing beta drivers to solve problems that occour with new games/demos.

I play C&C 3 on mine without much of an issue, although when I did the campaign it didn't save correctly in my user area (as I am on a domain environment here). Haven't seen if the latest patch fixes it. The game plays excellent though for my liking.

Re: How is Vista for gaming?

Only game I have issues with is Bioshock. Everything else is running as if it was under XP. Even some of the older games like Heretic 2, Judge Dredd, System Shock 2 and Blood 2 are working great after being patched up to latest build. I couldn't actually get Blood 2 and Heretic 2 to run at all under XP so its pretty cool for retro stuff!

Using Vista 64bit Ultimate with 1 Gb ram. I do get the pop up occasionally still saying the display driver has stopped working but it is not as frequent since the Catalyst 7.8 drivers. End of this month going to get another 1 Gb ram which should, touch wood sort out the issues I have. Other than that it is fine with games. With general use it is running superb with not one crash at all since I got it.

It all works fine, when the drivers do. nVidia's drivers are much better now but creative's suck big time.

Re: How is Vista for gaming?

I'm on Vista 32-bit and haven't had any major issues yet with games, a lot seems to be related to your hardware/drivers.

can't believe Creative have been so slow with proper Vista support, it's crazy

SimHQ have an interesting article -> http://www.simhq.com/_technology2/technology_110a.html

Compares Windows XP Professional vs. Windows Vista Ultimate using titles not usually benchmarked. Of course these are DX9 titles so bear in mind.

BF2. Project Reality, CoD, MoH all work perfectly.

32 Bit Vista Home Premium - not a single problem in 6 months.

Re: How is Vista for gaming?

I run Vista 64 and the only game Ive had a problem with is Sniper Elite - after I installed it Windows wouldnt boot so I had to repair it from disk. Definitely the game because I tried to install it again. Im that stupid. A quick google doesnt reveal any similar complaints though so maybe thats just me.

All other games Ive tried are absolutely fine.

There are a few things to make you want to buy home premium over basic.
But ultimate is over the top for most.

I have home premium, and i think it's the right one.
