xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

I recently upgraded my pc and got a quad core q6600 2.4 (whoop go me)

I can tell its quite fast but so far i havnt really stretched its skills, the most thats happened is ive view all 4 of my processors in task manager and it is a pritty site.

I was wondering if xp 32 bit edition hampers the effectiveness of the 4 cores and whether they can still be taken advantage of by applications. I just bought bioshock to test it all out and im running 4gb of 800mhz ddr2 and a 8500gt 512mb gfx card so i thought to put it mildly ide drop dung from a great height all over it. however I have had to change the gfx settings down to medium if not low.

Could anyone help me get the most out of this system without the aid of vista. Would xp 64 edition really help?

ive also got opensuse 10.2 64 to have a look at compiz fusion and eventually migrate away from windows.

but for now, how do i drop dung from a great height?

The only thing I can see wrong there is the graphics card, you have 4GB and a Quad, yet a £55-£60 graphics card. What resolution are you playing games at?

With that sort of spec, probably an 8800GTS would be more what your looking for, especially if your an avid gamer. That would complement the reset of your setup very well.

As you've got a 19" flat (panel?), I'd 100% agree with madman045, and also recommend the 320MB 8800GTS. Get the cheapest one you see - they're occasionally ~£160 on Scan's Today Only.

Vista 64-bit is more hassle than Vista 32-bit with practically no improvement/performance gain. I'd stick with that XP if I were you.

xp 32 won't hamper anything as not many things, more so games, will take advantage of the multiple cores enough to be hampered.

Re: xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

Game quality is pretty much always limited by graphics cards these days I'm afraid. All of the sub 8800 series Nvidia graphics processors are a bit of a con in my mind - the money is better spent on a DX9 only card, as far as gaming is concerned.

If you really want to appreciate how good your CPU is, do some grid processing or some such.

Re: xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

How much memory does Windows report that it can use? I'm pretty sure that at least 1.5GB of your RAM will not be accessible due to 32-bit operating systems only being able to access 4BG total and some of that address space will be taken up by your gfx card and other devices.

A 64-bit OS is required to take full advantage of your current configuration but the 64-bit versions of XP & Vista are not as well tested as the 32-bit ones...

Re: xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

thanks all for the quick replies.

Seeing as ive just spent quite a bit on this setup im not going to upgrade the gfx just yet. I used ntune to tweak it though and managed to get 7% mhz increase and 14% pci-e bus speed increase so that should help somewhat.

The motherboard is sli, so how would it perform if i wacked another 8500gt in there, or could i wack a 8800 in there and link them together aswell?

Re: xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

the 8800 would be downgraded to the performance through put of the 8600 as I read it.

As you've said you've spent a reasonable ammount of money then scrimped on the graphics card. If you had saved your cash for say a month or so you could have got the better graphics card and probably paid less for the stuff you've already bought.

Nope - that would probably result in worse performance than the 8800 on its own, if it worked at all.

Re: xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

well now ive got some real issues.

Ive had the pc around a week and I ran and installed opensuse and xp media center and it seemed quite lovely.

As you know my gfx card has been lacking somewhat so I decided to download the nTune program from nvidia and run it to help improve my gfx performance.

It basically runs a short 3d animation again and again increasing bus gpu cpu and memory power and testing which works best. I first of all ran the coarse tune which increasse it the 7% that i stated above however I thought I would leave it on last night and let it do a fine tune (3 hours long).

I have woken up this morning to find it on but no picture being displayed on my screen. I switched it off for 30 mins and tried a reboot but no luck.

The comp powers on but no picture is displayed. I have a feeling the gfx card is blown but I dont know how to test it. Could someone either point me in the right direction or help me to fix it.

    Much appreciation.

If you've only had it a week, then RMA the card as faulty.

    Then buy an 8800

Have you tried turning the computer off at the PSU or the socket rather than the power button? When my P5B crashes hard it won't start up again until its been fully powered down for a few seconds!

Re: xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

What Fraz said, is the ideal solution. If possible.

Infact, even if that card came back to life, I would personally suggest selling it on Ebay if you have to (if you couldn't get your money back), and then buy an 8800GTX. The GTS is good value, but I'd suggest finding the cheapest GTX you can find. Something like the Inno3d are usually great prices, and they are just as good as the XFX, Asus, etc. That would better match your processor, and you would get gaming greatness for a long time from that setup.

Re: xp 32 on quad core for gaming?

seriously, RMA the card if you can anyway, and get something worthwhile. The only reason to go for that sort of card is the necessity of dx10 gfx on a low performance system. For a lovely system like that you really want to be getting at least a 7900gs/x1950pro, more likely break the bank a little and get the 8800gts. If not too larger resolution (ie 1440x900 - common for 19"WS) then the 320MB version should do you well for the forseeable future. If dx10 isnt an issue the x1950xt is also a good price right now at ~£120.

As for the ?which doze question, if you aren't bothering with dx10 then stick with xp. 64-bit can be faster under testing and will let you use all that memory, but compatability issues are still massive, and for that reason most people sticking with their 32-bit OSs. Personally I'd stick where you are, sorry to be boring. But u/g that damn card
