I play at highest settings in DX9. And if I installed Vista, it would run at highest settings in DX10 too.
I actually also use my graphics card tweaks to force the game to use anti-aliasing. Although I read that that doesn't work in DX10 because the game is.. silly. (Thats partly why I am sticking with XP for now).
No choppy performance for me at all, although I got the occasional hitch - but that went away after I ran a defrag.
My pc is C2D E6600, 2gig of ddr2 ram, 8800gtx, 320gig seagate barracuda, gigabyte ds4 motherboard (965p). I play at 1680x1050. (everything at stock speed - no overclocking at all).
p.s. For Vista 64 bit, its best to use 4 gig of ram. I use 2 because I'm just using XP.

I have near Max specs, with Dx10.
Just V/sync off
Have to use the Beta drivers for the 8800 other wise you can get some issues with frame rate/tearing.
Edit
Forgot to add, 1280 x 1024

DX10
1920x1200
q6600 @3.2Ghz
2x1GB RAM @ 1080Mhz (4x1GB makes no difference to this system)
8800GTX 625/2000
Vista x64
Edit: Everything on except Force Global Lighting.
Everything on High.
No problems at all so far.

does 4gb ram make any difference usually in games?
XP Home
e4300 @ 2.66GHz
2GB RAM
8600GTS
I can run it at max settings, on 1024x768 on that!
AMD 3700+ San Diego @ 2.8GHz | Zalman CNPS 9500LED + Arctic Cooling MX-1 | Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe + Zalman Northbridge | 1024MB DDR RAM (2 x 512MB Corsair XMS Pro TwinX) | Leadtek nVidia 6600GT 128MB | Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Music | 2x80GB Hitachi Deskstar SATA-II (RAID 0) | Gigabyte 3D Aurora Case | Hiper Type-R 580W Modular | Enermax Ultimate Fan Controller| Microsoft Nautral 4000 | Logitech G5 + fUnc 1030| Ideazon Fang | SpeedLink Medusa 5.1 Surround Headset | Samsung SM913N 19" TFT | Compro DVB-T200
"Dell? You get better tech support with a cheese sandwich"
Dx9 here, but highest settings and v-sync on @1680x1050. Spec in My System. Never seen a moment of choppiness, it's all smooth and fast
1280x1024
All details to max, runs like a dream
E6600 (stock)
2gb Corsair ram
8800 GTS 640mb
Vista 32
XP home.
I think the x1950xt is a bit faster than the x1900xt and 7900GTO in shader heavy games. The GTO does better on doom3 engine and texture heavy games like gothic 3.
What are your RAM timings?
Vista DX10 1440 x 900
All MAXED out with Vsync on because there is tearing withought it. With it off i get 50-70FPS. Specs in 'my system'
thanks people, got another question
at which point would I expect choppiness (e.g. below___ FPS) and what would you say are suitable frame rates for fps games
DX9, Max settings @ 1680*1050. No problems whatsoever here.
My CPU is running at 3Ghz and my RAM is running on a divider at about 250mhz at 3-4-4-8 (stock timings at that speed). I doubt its CPU or RAM making a difference though.
Admittedly, Im not using the latest nvidia beta drivers, which are specifically for Bioshock, because. They're very buggy in CoH and a couple of other games.
