    DX10 - What Do I Need?

I came here to get something off my chest but I saw another DX10 demo when I was out.

1st - /Rant/ What's happening with patches? My new game wouldn't work so I clicked 'get updates.' The patch was over 200Mb in size! Did someone forget to pack one of the setup disks? /EndRant/

2nd - DX10. I had the chance to see the demo of a forthcoming release this afternoon. The graphics are superb but it's a bit jumpy (I'm being kind here.) That's on a quad core with two 8800GTXs. It's the 3rd DX10 game I've played and none of them are going to play smoothly on my PC with it's single 8800GTX from what I've seen. I play every DX9 title I have at 1600x1200 with everything turned up and they play well. The DX10 titles crawl at lower resolutions by comparison and don't look too good with low quality settings.
I remember the advertisements when I got my GPU - DX10 wallpaper more like, not quite what I expected. What do I need to play these games? A mainframe? I won't believe the hype next time. At least there are a bucket load of older titles going for a song.
That's another rant really isn't it, and nothing new... but really, what's available to play these games on, or is it a case of no-one knowing how to program DX10 yet?
... I use now a big vent for the whole machine now, but I cant use it forever, it is my grandma's ventilator...

    Re: DX10 - What Do I Need?

I suppose. I'm annoyed though that this card doesn't look as though it'll play anything DX10 properly. I'm used to older games looking amazing at high resolutions and don't want to go backwards. I had a 'first gen' DX9 card that played DX9 games for a good while after it was released. It was only a mid-range card too. There isn't a mid-range card that will play DX10 games yet in my opinion.
If you're listening nVidea and ATi - I won't be caught out by your marketing again.
I feel sorry for the software houses. I can't upgrade the card I have now for a good while and by then I'd probably need a new motherboard to use it... ie. a new system most likely. It will be a few years until I'll be able to play soon-to-be released games. At least I don't need Vista now and my disk can carry on collecting dust. It could turn out to be a bit of a mess all round.

    Re: DX10 - What Do I Need?

yea i remember the days where a mid range card can play the latest games at mid high settings. nowadays anything less than a high range card just wont cut it at even medium settings.

back in the day i had a 5600 geforce card that could play most of the current games out that time at high settings on 1280 res. At that time a 9800 pro was the high end card at that point and even that card lasted a good 2-3 years of playing games on ultra high settings. Now look at the 8800 series, they are struggling to run crysis on high settings, the ultra high settings are even disabled in the beta! the 8800 has only been out for a year too!

when will we see a mid range card that can play crysis flawlessly on mid high settings?

Oh, I dunno. My 7800GT seems to manage BioShock at 1280*1024 OK. I think the problem is that:
    • Coders haven't fully gotten to grips with DX10 yet
    • There are no video cards out yet that implement DX10 really well
    • DX10 is a bit broken
    • Vista is a bit broken
    • DX10 runs on top of Vista for double trouble goodness
    • The card drivers for Vista/DX10 are generally a bit substandard still.

Let's just say that I'm not real optimistic about enjoying DX10 at 1920*1600*100fps on my PC anytime soon - even when I do get round to upgrading.

    Re: DX10 - What Do I Need?

I suppose we'll get used to 1024x768 at medium settings. I'll have to because I'm not buying another GPU any time soon. It just such a backwards step... and there really doesn't seem to be anything on the horizon that's going to change that soon. Unless it is a combination of Vista, DX10 and dodgy programming that can be fixed, it's going to hit the market for new games. The guy in GAME the other day was telling everyone that bought Lost Planet EC (I think it was that anyway, it had 'Planet' in the name) that he wouldn't refund the game, even if returned unopened. That says something.

    Re: DX10 - What Do I Need?

I recall some patches being 20MB big back when games fitted on 1 CDs, and taking 600 odd MBs to install. I've seen some game taking 10 times as much space these days. So I guess I am not too surprised by patches getting 10 times bigger either. I am not saying it's a good thing, and it would be nice to do without it.. but it does not seem like the game developers have gotten better or worst at getting games out without needing major fixes.

I am all for more powerful mid-range card. And video card cycles seem to have slowed down lately (I guess nVidia has no real need to release a refresh for the 8800GTX right now). But nVidia's implementation of DX10 seems pretty solid to me, differing little with DX9 in Bioshock. Personally, I would not expect existing mid-range card to be able to play future games with all settings on.

And first gen mid-range DX9 card would mean Radeon 9500/9500 Pro (or 9600 series), and they did not exactly allow for Far Cry to be played on 1600x1200. There might be games released before Far Cry that offered both DX8 and 9 codepath, but it is the most memorable one on top of my head. And even the 9800XT, which came out not long before Far Cry, could not even do 45 FPS at that resolution, without AA/AF.

Frankly speaking, I've always said that people should buy a graphic card to play the games they want to play today. Those who bought a R3xx could enjoy many games up till then at high, if not top resolution with eye candies on. But they could not expect to do that with HL2 (I think some people bought it for that reason). Similarly, the 8800GTX could cope with most/all games up till then at resolution up to 1900x1200 with high details/AA/AF.

Granted, if I remember correctly, the R300 did allow even higher frame rate on Q3 than the 8800GTX on Q4. And, I do have the impression that the R300 had a longer run as a kick-ass card than other performance setting cards (though it may be due to the the FX5800 series flopping).

I am a little surprised to hear about 'jumpy' graphics on a 8800GTX SLi though. Could it be that the demo is simply well lacking optimisation?
