Your uni's stance on online gaming

Hey all, just moved to the UK recently and am at Bradford Uni, was gutted when I found out that you couldn't play a single online game in the halls, which i'll be living in for the next year Don't get me wrong, love the social scene, but not being able to play online is really getting to me (cold-turkey). Was wondering if anyone else's Uni shares the same anti-gaming policy?

Most of them do, however you can play lan games or you could atleast in my first year. We would often have 16 player halo games, or large games of wolf et.

Re: Your uni's stance on online gaming

The problem lies with the fact that the network is servicing that many people they can't really give a good QoS in regards to gaming traffic going in and out.

If you've a home network, you'll know how 1 person downloading can affect gaming. Now, imagine this on a larger scale and you get the general idea of it.

Anyway, you'll not have time to play games - what with all the social things planned at Uni

Seconding Lee, I barely had enough time in the day to sit down and just browse the net. You definitely won't have time to play online games.

Definite no no. Durham blocks basically all the ports, so no online gaming, P2P or much really. Even msn struggles to work lol.

However you can play networked games on the network.

Re: Your uni's stance on online gaming

Kent Uni didn't make a point of blocking gaming as such but it's more a point of 'block everything except....' instead of 'allow everything except...' I had to use a http tunnel just to activate HL2 which was annoying :/

Be sure to search the local network for games though, if it's anything like kent you'll easily find something.

Tho don't worry Be is available in the area so I have that all this year 24mb, online gaming and less than 5 mins to the science site. Bliss

Re: Your uni's stance on online gaming

My uni was fine at northumbria halls. Ping for CSS was about 70 at the worst and it was all wireless too

Ironically moving 5 minutes walk away and paying for the best cable service we can has ended up that we get WORSE pings, and WORSE download speeds..... (meant to be 20mb...we get 5 if we are lucky currently and pings are 250 or so at the very lowest....£39pm wasted IMO)

Wow, I was in Van Mildert back in the early nineties. Very friendly place, with 5 other colleges and the science site within easy walking distance.

Back then multilayer gaming was a few guys playing Doom with a long serial cable running between rooms. The college rooms where not networked back then, and only about 10% of students took PCs to university.

Cardiff also blocked pretty much every port in halls, the internet was designed to be a teaching aid

Still, hook up your xbox or PC and organise some lannage with everyone on the uni network.

Re: Your uni's stance on online gaming

Just got my Uni internet set up, it seems pretty good tbh. (Hertfordshire)

im getting 4.4mbps down/22mb up. In games i have only tried CSS, it seems to be working fine although i have only had it running for about 10 mins, ping averages around the 0-20 mark which is pretty good. And finally that im away from home and away from AOL on a wireless network , i finally dont have lagspikes!!!!
