Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

The expansion to NWN2 is out now

Just had a little play so far. Seems good - the engine, and in particular, the loading/saving times are much improved. Story is ok so far - bit 'more of the same' at the moment but I'm expecting it to get better - seems to have been influenced by the techniques in BG2:ToB at the moment. New classes (prestige and base) look wicked, and lots of cool things for the community too

Oh and more camera options! You can eventually get it back to how NWN2 was, or just try one of the newer ones which are very cool - making the game basically be controlled like just about any other cRPG you can think of.

Re: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

Havn't finished the main campaign on this one yet. Got a house near the docks to empty out. Just after you take out the people that are getting off the boat. Its really difficult and havn't made any real effort to do it in a while now. Will have to go back to it and get it done, love the game though think it does capture the feel of the origional.

Still got the 2 expansions to do on the first Neverwinter also, wife was complaining I was playing it to much as I done the main campaign on it in just over a week last year! Methinks I need to get back into Neverwinter in general!

Have the new camera angles improved things? I find the old ones challenging to say the least!

Short answer: yes. The camera is so customisable now you'll be able to find something you like. Infact by default it's quite different from the old modes and it takes quite a lot of work to get it back to the same, so good news for you. You can have it like baldurs gate (independant of characters), like NWN1 (on character) like Ultima VII (screen moves only when your character gets near the edge), you can have top down, over the shoulder, anything inbetween. You can chose how you select/control companions, how you move the characters.. it's all very very customisable.

Re: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

Dumb question but I'll ask it anyway ... Are the new camera modes available for the main campaign if the expansion is installed? I really enjoyed NWN1's mode and have found NWN2's annoying to the point where I don't play the game.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

    Yes

As are the new races and classes (I think, haven't checked). One of the new base classes looks like a real powerhouse - basically a cleric who casts spells like a sorcerer - no memorising before hand. AND they get weapon focus/specialisation in their deities chosen weapon AND they get cool resistances etc.

Re: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

The classes etc won't be, but the camera control might well end up in a patch at some point. MotB takes the game up to version 1.10

I'd say it's still worth getting (it's v. cheap, only 15 quid) for the extra races/classes, epic levels etc. even putting aside the 20-30 hour (supposedly) campaign .

Re: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

Yeah, I got bored of the original NWN2 about three quarters of the way through (I think). It wasn't bad, it just wasn't really good. All the characters where such cliches and it was all just so samey to the last one and nothing was really special or great. I have played probably more than 50 RPG's, and I enjoyed most of them more than NWN 1 and 2. I don't know why.

But even so... I'm still tempted by this expansion, because it starts at higher level. So the combat might be more exciting, right from the get go. (Unlike starting at level 1).

Also, I played the expansions for the original NWN, and although one of them was rubbish, one of them was really great.

Re: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

Yup, agreed. I only finished NWN2 quite recently, despite pre-ordering it. I couldn't put my finger on any one thing that was bad about it - infact there were lots of good things.. it just didn't really come together to drive me to play it. It was good to come back to every now and again though.

So far MotB is better - the higher level stuff helps a lot, though I'm getting a bit bored of my character from NWN2 so I might just make a new one. The story plays out much more like BG2:ToB which I think helps. Still not sure I could play through it straight after the original campaign without a break though.

    You're brave

What did you have in mind - go through the OC, or try some other module?
