I've had an idea: try this

Hi guys

I have had an idea. Forget graphics and eye candy.

Can you write a quick, punchy, interesting story about your favourite moment in a game? I don't mean "the boss level was MAD hard.....MAD hard"

I mean something like:

".......an my friend was trying to creep up behind the orc, using all his mana to stay invisible, while we were piling through the front line goblins, and he was laughing his nut's off on voice comm's, the stress coming through in his voice, though he was trying to hide it with comedy, when ...BAM....a massive fireball engulfed him! The language was blue, from him, as he panned his dead character's view around, trying to see who'd jut nuked him, and from all of us, as we scattered in every direction, to avoid becoming BBQ adventurers. No one, to this day, admitted killing him, and no body seemed to be visible or within range, so it MUST have been one of us, but WHO?"

Ok...pants example...but I can do better with time.

I've flown IL-2 missions where the stress levels for all 12 people have been intense. I've been in siege positions with TiG and Nick on a Tom Clancy mission where we have been crying with laughter. I've played UT with Nick until the pain in my ribs from laughter was too much. I've played Tekken Tag and lost so many times to Auran that I could have thumped him, except hes' so MASSIVE

And recently (Dec 06) I landed a plane on an Aircraft carrier with the entire MA squadron watching... knowing I would blow them all up, and not only did I get it down, BUT I pulled the wings up AND swerved to avoid Trig.

You get the idea....

What moment in gaming will you always remember? Word it here..... GAME PLAY is key.

Nick and I played Return to Castle Wolfenstein in half hour shifts one night for 8 hours and it was a hoot.

If this idea makes no sense...I apologise now

Re: I've had an idea: try this

I think my all time gaming moment was playing Q3 CTF. I had some mates round for a lan and we were playing till the silly hours, there was only about 6 of us if I remeber rightly. I was flag carrier for the red team and I literally had one health and only 6 shots left in my rail gun, none of my teams mates were with me because they had been blown away by the blue team.

There was no health to be had in the area I was in and I had the blue team literally bearing dwon on me like a tonne of bricks and I was only half way out of their base. 3 bots and 3 human players were all lined up waiting for me right next to the entrance of our team base, I fired off one shot and got 2 of the blue teams bots, a second shot saw one of my mates on the blue team go down, so that was three down three to go and still only on one health, a third shot fired and another mate down, a fourth shot and I took out the 1 remaing human player and the one remaining bot now with 2 rail shots left I delierved the other teams flag back to my base and won the match

Best gaming moment ever for me

Re: I've had an idea: try this

mine was in Counter-Strike (what else).. theres an Icelandic CS team (or there was) called murk. they were the best in Iceland. the big headed american bloke Brian "Destrukt" Flanders 5 manned them, and put it in his cs video. they had the TS2 recording and added the voice over the video, they count the 5 kills and DKT then says "not today murk, not today" in a buzz lightyear voice...

skip foreard a few months, and we are playing one of his many clans (he clan hopped alot) and its 5v2, (me and another clan mate being the 2). my friend took the 4 out and planted the bomb before brian killed him and started to defuse on dust2 b site. i'm in bomb site A so run my arse off to get there knowing im not going to make it, fire 7 de rounds into the wall betwen middle and bomb site b, and headshot dkt. we never won another round.. but you can imagine, the vent and the in game text was flooded with "not today brian, not today".. oh happy days

and if you have no idea what im on about.. i appologise

Re: I've had an idea: try this

I quite enjoyed the flying we did in IL2 earlier this year. I remember one particular mission we were all in IL2s against some German ground targets and a couple of 109s. Managed to get a few good ground hits with rockets and started going home. Decided to help someone with a 109 on their tail and manged to get in the perfect position behind him, pulled the trigger and nothing happens. Try again and still nothing. Turned out I had got stuck in chat somehow, so pressing the trigger was being recognised as an "Enter" press, and I couldn't get out of chat mode.

Anyway, the 109 had now turned onto me whilst I'm trying to fiddle with the chat interface and flying, so ended up having to run for home, turning and twisting whenever he got in range. Got back to base and then realised my landing gear wouldn't lower because of the problem above! Geiss had already landed in tact and was at the side of the runway, but Sair/Rias was ditched in the middle of the runway after the undercarriage collapsed on landing. Got a good line-up for landing (considering I'm still trying to escape this 109) and pulled off the creamiest landing ever. Not only managing to get on the deck in one piece, but I swerved to avoid the wreck on the runway and ended up parked right next to Geiss off the runway!

To top it off, Nick comes into land afterwards and rolls. The plane disintegrates and a flaming fuselage rolls pass me. Just as it comes to rest, we were very surprised to see him bail out of the flaming aircraft on the ground and dive to safety just as it exploded! Was a very entertaining mission.

Re: I've had an idea: try this

I was trying to give Fliss a crash course in iconic moments ni gaming history, bu having her spend an hour per game on a number of classic games. One of these was System Shock 2.

I was standing behind her, as she got through the tutorial level, in a "meh, it's an FPS" manner. She carried on into the main game, a little disoriented, and worked her way through the beginning of the game. for those who haven't played it, you start off needing to get through an airlock to avoid being sucked into space. she manages this, and stumbles on, until she steps through a locked door with a keycard she found. and meets her ferst hybrid. which shouts at her, and runs at her with a lead pipe

she freaks out, and refuses to touch the game again.

good times!

Re: I've had an idea: try this

Playing medal of honor spearhead for my clan in a league war. Drawing 14 - 14 so far, this round wins or loses it for one clan. Freeze tag objective based, get shot, freeze, get unfroze go again..untill last minute..sudden death.

8 v 8 match, my clan do our usual thing, move up slowly, two teams of three and one team of two which was standard for this map (The Hunt), clearing buildings. We push through defenses..taking loses but holding positions to unfreeze..last one minute 20 seconds..chat on teamspeak is focusing around staying alive. Then there was me alone..with a BAR (machine gun).

Then sudden death kicks in ..so now ive got to either kill all or 8 or get the objective, i decide to go for the objective killing on my way..so i looked down ladder before moving see someone stood there..shoot him. go to window see two guys making a run for the building..open fire woudning one killing one..i jumped out of buidling..to land just behind the wounded enemy..bashed him. eventually worked it down to me v 2 with 20 seconds on the clock..decide to make a run for the bomb..i start shooting at the usual hiding spots.then a lucky break..i kill one..5 seconds left...being shot at from behind..so i jump spin and fire...headshot....winning the round and war 15 - 14

hmm abit longer then expected

Re: I've had an idea: try this

Uncanny, because i've just come out of a 1v1 quake 4 match which meets this forums criteria...

Anyway, mates server, hosting the map ztn3dm1 (was an official q3 tourney map for those who don't know) and i practically lived in the 4 official 1v1 q3 maps, and thus think i'm rather good at the level

Been playing the level for about 45 mins, without loss, then some guy joins (alias r3ap3r) and watches me playing and beating my mate, all the time calling me a n00b, and how he's going to pwn me etc etc.

Tournament finished, everyone spectated except reaper and me, as by this point everyone wanted his to stfu.

Round started, and i managed a quick kill from start and grabbed all the MH and RA, he was running about for about 2 mins, and fair play, he could strafe, i was having trouble keeping up with him, and after another 60 seconds of trying to predict where our opponants were with spam shot (rather accurately...) we had a close quarters rocket battle which he won, and then followed up with 3 spawn rapes, and another 5 kills, so he is 9-1 up, and i'm thinking that i've got no chance with 4 mins left on the clock.

He was on low health after the last kill and a managed a machine gun kill, followed by picking up the MH and a RL, quick rocket kill, and spammed 3 rockets to the LG before disappearing through the teleporter, and i managed a fluke spawn kill, 9-4, 3 mins left... greandes flying to all the spawns in site, got a hit followed by another... 9-5. Line of plasma to the spawn in the top 'coridoor' dead within a second of spawning.... 9-6, 2.5 mins left...

No spawn kill this time, and i managed to mess up the RA jump, and he got it, but also a rail in the face for his efforts, and he decides to spam some grenades to the rail room, i jump a couple of grenades upwards, he gets hit in the face 9-7 1min 30 on the clock... you could imagine how fast my heart was going!

He decided to just run for it, 15 seconds left... i catch him shooting through the MH coridoor, and double rail him before he get to the teleporter... at which i spam rockets through hoping to get one of the 2 spawns in it viewing angle.. waiting on the clock to countdown to my inevitable 9-8 defeat, and i hear a 'chink' 'chink' YOU ARE TIED FOR THE LEAD.. and to make things even funier, he had already typed 'gg' so, sudden death it was!

spawn by the LG, grab the MH, YA, through the teleporter, grab the other YA, plasma gun, RA, grenade launcher and steal the RL, he managed to get.. the rail (which he was rather good with)

I'm jumping along, fire a rocket and hear the 'chink' of a hit, cut him off, and through shed loads of plasma into him, and at this point i can hear his death screams, so must be on low hp, and goto cover the 50hp health bubble, as im strafing as fast as i can (mwheel press = jump) my mousewheel goes mental, and as im coming to where the teleporter destination is, i switch to.. the gauntlet.. just my luck, but at the same time, he appears through the teleporter, clearly didn't have enough health, and i won with a mighty 'HUMILIATION' sudden death kill... he wasn't happy but boy didnt we all laff at him for bigging himself up...

Got plenty other's like it, mostly involving tripple mid air rockets on dm17 (longest yard) in quake 3, crazy fun, and hilarious after a couple of beers.

and christ, please excuse the essay i've just typed out
*insert something whitty here*

Re: I've had an idea: try this

my favourite moment has to be playing supreme commander

am loosely in a clan called DI and druing beta we were playing a 3v3 with a new recruit we had just got called unconquerable, (any of you that play multi may have heard of him)
anyway hes on one team and hes good rank number one and hes full of it going on how great he is and all noobs suck so i get killed not a huge shock but we got a guy on our team called di_corpus hes from somewere like russia,Anyway he's also very good but not cocky with it.
so i'm dead unconquerable is building and expanding and so is corpus and its late game now these are the only two guys really in it.
so unconq babbles some crap about this is it you dead now corp and launches a couple of nukes at his base,as they come down up goes the anti nuke crisis over then all of a sudden corpus returns the favour, except this guy has been going all guns building nuke launchers for 20 mins now and launches 5 nukes at him. we were all in stitches as the nukes came raining down.

needless to say unconquerable didn't have enough defence and he quit the game after the 2nd nuke hit with another 2 still in the air.

it was absolutely brilliant cos this guy is good but he thinks he is some kinda god or something so was a great moment for us.

sadly he left our clan the next day over it but it was superb anyway.

Re: I've had an idea: try this

Hehe, I like that one.

I have a huge Everquest story but I think it would probably bore people, and people would only understand it if they knew EQ.

I did have a similar story though with C&C Tiberium Sun. (The old one, not the new Tiberium Wars). God I loved that game... Anyway, I was playing one night in a 2vs2 match, and it was me and some guy, vs 2 annoying brats. They where both lol'ing the whole time and going on about how us noobs where going to get pwnt and all that typical annoying kiddy crap. Anyway, we are on a huge custom made map and we can't see what they are doing, but they somehow managed to spy on us. We had been playing for about 40 minutes, and all of a sudden, they sent about 50 bombers at my partners base and wipe him out completely. They are both "Lmao!!!!"ing at him, and going on about how they are coming for me next.

But the thing is... I had been turtling the whole time and had ridiculously huge amounts of cash and units built, so rather than feeling like I was in trouble and wondering if I should just give up, I felt like the opposite. So I started REALLY concentrating, because I was determined to beat these two clowns. So I started preparing.

One of the great things about that game, is that it was so well balanced. If you where a dummy with one track thought process, you would get your bum handed to you. And it was clear that these two guys where just like that. So basically, they invested everything they had, in an enormous air force, but their secret was out now. So I started building a firewall around my entire base. I then started building my own huge air force, and I also had my usual uber attack strategies at the ready.

Another thing with that game.... is that it didn't really matter that my partner was killed. I could harvest all his tiberium, so as long as you can concentrate hard enough, you can basically be as strong as you are mentally capable of.... So my base now extended to about a third of the entire map, and these two dorks started to get suspicious. They built up their huge air force again, and then after a while, they got too suspicious of my quietness and the fact that I hadn't given in... So predictably, their banter stopped, and they both sent their huge, entire airforce towards me, hoping they would wipe me out in one swoop.

But 1 second before their enormous hoarde of planes reached my base, I just clicked the firewall. Their enormous mass of bombers fumble through the flames and they all come crashing down in an enormous explosion . They both start freaking out at me, "YOU FU&%&* NOOB BAST£%*!!!!!!" etc.. haha Its at that point you know they are in trouble... I guess they had never played poker

So I send my airforce at them, and it takes out their construction yards. They both rush to build a new one from their vehicle factory, but my little subteranian vehicles arrive, packed with engineers, and capture their vehicle plants. Then I can start building stuff in their base, and I can just picture them both whimpering at their PC's

Usually I don't get that much pleasure out of beating some stranger, in a game.. over the internet. But these guys where being real nobs for the entire game, and they where SO convinced that they "pwnd" everyone and that everyone was a noob compared to them etc... So just before their last building fell, I reminded them, that they had both just been thoroughly defeated by a single, lone, noob

Beautiful description of tibsun right there! I was a pretty high rank player on that game and can completely understand that...me and GamesMaster vs Lurker and Hamishoo, damn they were some close battles.

Re: I've had an idea: try this

The stories of C&C and Supreme Commander reminded me off a supreme commander battle i had with a mate.

Anyway, it was 1 v 1, I was UEF he was some evil scum bag. We both decided we would have a peace time and not use specials such as nukes etc etc, we set this to around an hour and half, plenty of time. Started using my usual tactic when starting of building.

So I decided with the peace time in place i can concentrate on getting a huge amount of resources built up. Quickly advanced to level 3 for air and ground units. So after abit of scouting i realised that there were only two ground ways into my base and the other option was air..so i lined guarded the ground attack ways of my base with plenty of ground defense then built clusters of air defense around my base defending all areas possible.

Then started building up a mass of ground and air units, until eventually i reached my unit limit . So sent two scout planes out to spy on his base (sneaky i know) anyway, once i saw his base i was shocked, he had masses and masses of anti air protecting all his key structures with ground defense accompanying aswell as shield generator after shield generator.

A second after the peace time ran out i launched an air assault on his energy field..very little air denfense but plenty of shields..took out on shield generator and one advanced energy plant..great i thought. Then i noticed he had sent three subcommanders..shielded to attack my defense..so defenses started blasting him before he took his shields of..then he walked into middle of my defenses turned his shields of and started shooting, eventually he died after wiping out a mass of my ground defenses with one sup com and ground units with another..no problem..i always have contruction units in way point mode ready to create stuff if i lose summet

So i launched a small ground attack to see what he had, realised he had a huge defense and realised ground units werent the way to go..so built my sub coms meanwhile he was trying to use planes to attack me but not making a dent..so we were at a stand still..both frantically seraching for a break in each others defenses. After 2 and a half hours of playing including the one and a half hour peace time..we were still at a stand still, both taking loses but holding..nothing was working..then i decided to unleash my sub coms and air assault on his main frontal defense position..made my way up to it..started the plane bombardment then gave my sub coms the fire order..great i thought..im going to reduce his defense to nothing..then..the worst thing ever..internet connection interuppted! his gf decided to download stuff and threw his connection off

So no one won and no one lost..still waiting for our rematch muahahah!

Thanks! And yeah, that game could have some really close battles. I'm not completely sure what it is, but it is still my favourite RTS to this day. I just loved it. Infact, I'm tempted to re-install it again. These modern RTS's don't quite live up to it for me

One other match I remember playing, was just a 1 on 1. And we played on a map called "Night of the mutants" which was a really huge map. You don't seem to get maps that big anymore in RTS's. Anyway, I got absolutely slaughtered... I was turtling again, and built up a nice little army. I sent them down to the opposite corner of the map to find his base, and I found his little base. We had a decent fight, and I managed to win and destroy it all. But the game didn't end....... "Uh oh.." I thought. He must have a second base. So I started scouting around for his other base. The stealth made it impossible to see unless you actally walked into. A few moments later, all my units where dead, and I wasn't sure where.

I then start panicking and rushing anything I have in his general direction (never a good idea). I was mainly hoping that I destroyed his main base earlier so if I could find him again, it would probably be just a small part of his base clinging on. But again, all my units got wiped out. I think the game went on for about 3 hours, and he didn't attack once. I just spent the entire game trying to find him, and dying. I ended up with no money and not really much base left, so I told him "good game, I give in". When the game ended, it reveals the whole map.. and I swear... about 95% of the surface of the entire map was his. Not just a big spread out base that looks bigger than it actually is... but a really compact base with thousands of power stations and vehicle factories and dozens of all main buildings.. I couldn't believe it. He was like some kind of super alien intelligence Never seen anything like it.

Ouch! Thats the worst way to end a match I remember that used to happen from time to time with me too, back in the tiberium sun days. I was using a 56k dial up connection back then, so all kinds of things used to go wrong. There was one point for a few months, where is somebody called the house while I was playing, it would just disconnect the net connection Not good. Especially when you had been downloading a 2 meg file for the past several hours

That was a great mission! I have memories of Zak asking why i bailed, literally moments before it exploded.

I could write another story about this mission from my perspective, as it's the only gmaing experience i really remember clearly enough!
