My luck with consoles seems to be terrible these days. Not only has my second Xbox 360 broken quite recently but my Wii has also died!
The customer service experiences have been very different though.
Microsoft: My first Xbox 360 died about 3 months ago with three red lights. After spending 2+ hours on hold/speaking to their Indian call centre, I eventually got permission to return it. I either had to wait in for UPS to collect it or take it down to own of only three UPS depots in the UK. After returning it, it took Microsoft 23 days - not to repair it, but to simply send out a refurb unit as a replacement.
It turned out that the refurb unit they sent me had a dodgy DVD drive. They obviously hadn't tested it thoroughly before sending it out to me and recently it got to the stage where it turned from "annoying" to "game always freezes after 20 minutes".
So, I phoned up Microsoft and got through to their Indian call centre again. The person I spoke to barely understood what I was saying and asked me to do the most idiotic things to resolve the problem. Example: after learning that I don't play on Xbox Live, I was asked to play online until the problem happened again. This is despite me saying that I was getting disc read errors and despite me saying it takes 20 minutes to reproduce the problem! Again, eventually I got the OK to send it back. I was quoted a 25 day turn-around time.
Nintendo: Basically, it looks like my Wii overheated and it damaged the the graphics chip. I phone up Nintendo and within five minutes I'm speaking to someone at their UK call centre. The person is very apologetic and recognises the problem before I've even finished telling him what happened. I'm e-mailed a Parcel Force label and I can take it back to any Post Office for return to Nintendo. Estimated turn-around time: 1 week.
So hats off to Nintendo.
My Xbox 360 was sent off on 1st October. My Wii was sent off today (9th October). Who wants to take a guess on which one I'll receive back first?![]()
