    EA buys Bioware/Pandemic

Video game maker Electronic Arts today announced it has reached a financial agreement with Elevation Partners to purchase VG Holding Corp., the firm that owns Pandemic Studios and BioWare Corp. The $860 million USD deal should help solidify EA's action and role-playing game catalog with 10 new games that are featured for three different platforms.
So, who's ready for Jade Empire 2008, 2009, 2010 etc.?

Any time EA buy somebody, it's not a good thing. They are rapidly becoming the MS of the gaming world and it does worry me somewhat that they are heading in a direction where they can strongly influence how gaming develops.

As long as Bethesda Softworks remain solvent I'll stay happy.

There have also been new studios reaching out for the first time in quite a while, certainly in the RPG area, especially from Eastern Europe, so there's hope for a while at least.

    Re: EA buys Bioware/Pandemic

    Yup, not good news.

EA seem to be getting too much of a market share for a company that doesn't care for it's customers. Mind you I'd heard EA made a loss last year... so maybe there is still hope!

The problem with the ever-rising costs of game-making is the ever diminishing number of small game devs. Back when you had Dos and 3.1 you had a huge array of 'home made' games. Now people don't bother so much because the chances of someone playing it is minimal.

It's a shame really... be good if more engines became open source so there is a fighting chance of more user-made games.

Last data I saw (feb 07) talked about end of 06, and in the last three months of 06 they made $160m profit, better than expected.

OK, looks like last financial year they made $1879m gross profit

Not a huge Bioware fan, but still, its going to be really sad to see them turn the Baldurs Gate / NWN franchise into a modern consolised Diablo clone.

How long will it be before EA get an EU sanction against buying up all the small companies?

As long as they don't buy up all the small companies in one country they'll probably get away with it

And the emergance of so many eastern european independants lately would go in their favour too.

urgh- terrible news. Bioware remains my favourite studio and currently still buy everything they put out.... not as positive about everything that EA sells (although buying everything they produce would probably bankrupt me)
