PCG Uk December issue

Got my PCGUK today - 3days early as a subscriber. So if anyone is interested, they reviewed a few upcoming/recently released games and here are the scores they gave:

Hellgate London (cover game): "Diabolical" 73%
Armed Assault - Queen's Gambit: "Functional" 65%
Football Manager 2008: "Conservative" 84%
Race '07: "Vehicool" 83%
Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts: "Offence" 89%
The Settlers - Rise of an Empire: "Homely" 79%
Ageod's American Civil War: "Beauregard" 83%
Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare: "Occupational" 85%
Fifa '08: "Flagging" 66%
Clive Barker's Jericho: "Barking" 64%
Galactic Assault: "Convictorius" 69%
Undercover Operation Wintersun: "Higgledy-bonkers point-and-click nonsense. From hell." 41%
Sega Rally: "Segacious" 78%
Bounty Bay Online: 38%
The Sims 2 - Bon Voyage: 80%
Dance Battle Audition: 57%
Requital: 21%
Obscure II: "Less survival horror, more enduring tiredness." 52%
Neverwinter Nights 2 - Mask of the Betrayer: "Faithful" 84%

They also had previews on Starcraft II, Spore, Assassin's Creed and Gears of War.

I suppose that's the downside of 13issues/year, the December issue is out late October, and the Christmas issue late November - so games coming out in early November sometimes miss a review from them till after the game is out: UT3, Crysis, Gears of War...

I really don't get why people buy magazines anymore...I mean I know there are occasions when you fly etc, or on the bog, but besides that, the digital content out there really is making no sense for printed anymore.

Besides, think of the trees

I disagree. To some extent anyways.

A Magazine is a lifesaver everytime your internet dies, or you get a powercut, for long train journeys or flying like you said.... Or of course bed-time reading when all your mates have buggered off teamspeak and your bored to death!

Cant beat the captions in a mag and its often handy to easily reference them for hardware and such

Thats my opinion anyways.

Re: PCG Uk December issue

Jerico - I'm not surprised to see the low score as the demo was enough to put me off.
Settlers - uninstalled the demo as quick as it was installed.
CoD4 - quite looking forwards to that one. After my CoD2 installation disc exploded, I've been waiting for this to replace it.

I haven't bought a gaming or hardware magazine in years - by the time it's edited and gone to print it's out of date. I much prefer what's offered on the 'net these days - video, up-to-date news and information, discussions, etc. I'm not keen on reading a standalone review - the more opinions the better and magazines, obviously, don't offer that feature.

I do still subscribe to a couple of movie magazines (Total Film and DVD Review) though as I've yet to find a trustworthy, spoiler-free, online alternative.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good

Re: PCG Uk December issue

Why did they call Hellgate "diabolical"??

I can understand people not liking it because its not their kind of game, but I can't imagine why anyone would call it diabolical. Unless it was some kind of play on words of Diablo? Diabloical ;P

Re: PCG Uk December issue

It's sort of a pun: diabolical just means devilish or demonic. I assume Hellgate has demons etc in it. Therefore it can be diabolical because it's got demons in it, or diabolical in the more recent sense of the word because it's rubbish. Either would be correct judging by the demo...

Re: PCG Uk December issue

Why brave? 73% from PCG is "not utterly miserable, but very good either" normally. Sometimes it means "could be much better but so buggy as to be almost broken" as well (If I remember rightly I think they scored Vampire: Too Many Subtitles: Bloodlines down for being pretty much broken at launch, for example). It's not as if they're one of the magazines/websites which never score anything below 70%.

It's not as if the Hellgate demo showed it as worth any more than 70-odd percent anyway really, to my mind.

Re: PCG Uk December issue

Well if its a review of the demo then its probably even a bit high by the sounds of it But if its a review of the actual game, its quite low. Maybe not brave if they are always giving mediocre scores to games with bugs, but most online sites seem to give ridiculously high scores to games nowdays. So 73% looks especially low. They may end up being right on the money, but if the game becomes another WoW then they could look a bit hasty.

Re: PCG Uk December issue

Nah, PCG are one of those magazines that actually use the full range of 0-100%. Well, 3% (Leisure Suit Larry) to 96% (HL2), at least. 73% from them probably means you might like it if you like that kind of thing, but it's not going to have any great cross-genre appeal. Unless it really is buggier than a week-dead goat in a swamp, of course.

Actually, I think I remember them even refusing to give a score to a game once. Can't remember what that was now. The quote was something like "the developers couldn't be bothered to finish the game, why should we be bothered to finish the review?".

If true that's a glaring ommision. PC Gamer have been a great source of previews, it's strange that they didn't put it in this issue.
