    Bioshock demo problems

I'm having some problems with the Bioshock demo I downloaded through Steam. I'd like to know whether these are hardware problems, as I'm considering buying the game.

    1. I can't see a mouse pointer in the menu, I have to wave the mouse around until I hit a menu option, and then navigate using intuition

    2. When the game loads, I get a confusion of nonsensical graphics. I'm leaning towards this being my 9800 Pro not being up to the game. If this is true, what AGP graphics card should I go for?

    Cheers

    Re: Bioshock demo problems

Graphics problems are lying with the 9800 Pro card. Guessing that is why the mouse isn't there either. The game requires Pixel Shader 3 and the 9800 series only has Pixel Shader 2. There is a beta hotfix out there made by a 3rd party that allows the game to be played on the Shader 2 cards but not sure of the current situation with it.

You will need to invest in a Shader Model 3 card to be able to play it properly though. Something like the Nvidia 76oo series or higher or the ATI X1950 series or higher. You can get both of these on AGP and would resolve the issues you are having. Personally would go for the ATI X1950 Pro, decent price and plenty power under the hood for most games. Doing fine with most details set to maximum in 1024x768 on The Witcher. Also got me through Bioshock with no major problems on my side except the bugs in the game which have yet to be fixed.

You will also need to get a higher power supply as most modern cards require a lot more juice. You want to be looking at around the 550 watt mark to run one of those cards mentioned. I would also get another 1Gb stick of ram as a lot of the games lately have been needing 2 Gb to run smooth (moreso Vista though).

Hope this info helps, if you need anything else just give us a shout!

    Thanks Ferral

I should update my specs, that PSU blew up in the summer, I now have a 500W model. I need a graphics card to run at 1360 x 768 as that's the resolution of my LCD TV. I may just wait until next year and upgrade the whole system. I've been wanting a Shuttle for a while anyway.
