That makes me think about installing it. It actually works in XP, if you use dosbox.

This thread also reminds me that I wanted to get a pair of games called Summoner and Summoner 2. I never played them and they where popular with those who played them.

I didn't think Swars was an all time classic but I did like it a lot.

I still remember cheating and dropping satelite rains all over the map!

Anyone remember this Looking Glass classic? Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Re: The greatest forgotten gem deal ever?

I really liked the original and add on - but I couldn't get into Swars.
There was a game of the same genre/clone called Gender Wars. It was never considered a gem, but I wanted to like it, simply because the description seems fun and amusing (light hearted version of Syndicate). Yet there was something missing about the game - something that stopped me from going back for more after playing a few levels.

Syndicate Wars was fantastic. I remember being young and poor, so played the demo from a PC Zone disc over and over for months whilst I was saving my pocket money.

IIRC, you could advance your research level by bringing your PC clock forward a few years.

I own and have also completed Summoner with both endings Fantastic game in my opinion and my favorite rpg I have played to date. Summoner 2 was only ever released on PS2 and I still havent had the chance to play it through apart from a go at the demo, however it was quite a bit different from Summoner and not in a good way.. I wish there was a summoner 3 in devolpment

Anyone remember Mission Force:Cyberstorm?
To be honest, I picked up a lot of games in the bargain bins. Many I ended up enjoying more than Swars. Wouldn't know where to start listing!

Nice! Wow thats quite a recommendation. I think I'll buy it. I think I saw it for sale online really cheap, but I didn't buy it because I wanted to find the sequel too. But now I know that isn't a PC game, I can forget about it.

It's a shame no one is willing to do a game like Syndicate Wars now, with a proper 3D Engine with some destroyable terrain would be awesome

Re: The greatest forgotten gem deal ever?

I'm glad so many people have fond memories of swars. I'd like to know what the 'missing features' were meant to be. Bullfrog did that a lot, I remember Dungeon Keeper was supposed to have lots of features that never showed up.

Personally, I think Syndicate Wars would make an absolutely rocking film.

Now, Dark Omen, which no one has talked about ... you will be able to find much better retrospectives than any I could give on this game but in a nutshell it was mint, but really hard, kind of like a Tic-Tac ... but not. Anyway, it was an RTS game in 3D environment populated by 2D sprites. At the time it looked beautiful (coloured lighting) and was very atmospheric from the talking head intros (you thought Starcraft invented that right?) to the war cries of your troops and units each of which have their own leader and personality. I wish I was good at games so that I could have got beyond the third level and actually played some of the game.

nope you certainly did

its only a forgotten gem as in no-one has made a recent remake. and if it wasnt for it being brought up now i wouldn't have thought of a remake.... just a perfect moment in gaming history. will not actually ever be forgotten for those that were lucky enough to play it when it was fresh and new.

im going to suggest a pioneer in 3d shooters, descent.

and also... a monolithic series recently castrated - mechwarrior. the battletech universe NEEDS another PC game. MECHWARRIOR, CHOOSE YOUR CLAN

Re: The greatest forgotten gem deal ever?

With reference to the post on the previous page, I'm not referring to Syndicate being a forgotten gem, I think everybody of a certain age knows that game and remembers it fondly. Syndicate Wars on the other hand disappeared without a trace. I think it sold 10 000 copies. Seriously. And this despite it garnering 90% reviews left right and centre.

You're also right about MechWarrior, I remember playing the demo for that over and over again in 1994 after upgrading to a DX4 100 with 8 meg of RAM. I particularly like typing "enolagay" Sweet, sweet suicide/genocide.
